CAP Completion Teams Recommendation Approved, Prioritized by Cabinet

Approved by Academic Senate, identified as an institutional priority by Cabinet to launch Completion Teams for all 8 MPC CAPs in the 2021-2022 academic year.

Completion Teams Implementation Group (CTIG) Formed

CTIG, made up of administrators, faculty, and classified professionals, began building the framework for the establishment of Completion Teams at MPC.

Data Coaching Academy Launch

MPC’s first cohort of 8 faculty data coaches completed the Data Coaching Academy in preparation to serve on CAP Completion Teams.

Campus Engagement and Preparation

GP Faculty Coordinators engaged with various CAP Completion Team membership groups across campus in preparation for the kickoff while also finalizing team charges and resources for team leads. PRIE & IT worked to build reports that will provide initial student data for Completion Teams.

8 CAP Completion Teams will begin meeting and engaging in the charges and key activities identified for phase one.

What are CAP Completion Teams?

Completion Teams are committee style work teams that bring together administrators, discipline faculty, counseling faculty, academic support experts, and student services specialists to collaboratively and intentionally engage in outcome based inquiry and action focused on increasing the success of all students and programs within a CAP.

Completion Teams will be implemented in a phased in approach.

Phase one priorities & key activities will include:

Establishing norms and goals within the team
Developing a shared understanding of equity
Accurately identifying students within the CAP
Examining initial student data
Identifying areas of interest and inquiry
Prioritizing and developing plans for inquiry
Supporting success and retention of students within a CAP

And here’s where you all come in! You may have seen the all users email call for discipline faculty participation on Completion Teams. I’m asking Senators for your support in this area. Please spread the word to your discipline faculty colleagues at division and department meetings and via direct one-to-one conversations. There are a total of 8 Completion Teams with 1 to 4 available slots for discipline faculty participation. We’re excited about the opportunity for individuals from across college areas and constituencies to come together and focus on students CAP by CAP. Kickoff meetings will be held between February 22 and March 10, so, in the meantime, feel free to share this flyer [click link]

2022 Scale of Adoption Self-Assessment (SOAA)

Here we are again with a chance to review the SOAA, which is the report the college submits to the Chancellor’s Office detailing our progress on Guided Pathways and noting any challenges and need for support. Adria, as Senate President, is one of the people responsible for signing off on this report, so I’m bringing the draft for first read today. Right now, the document is still being reviewed by other campus stakeholders in order to ensure we’re reporting accurately, but I’ll be sure to apprise you if there are any substantive changes to the content of the report, which I doubt will be the case.

The draft is linked here, and you also have access to the link on today’s agenda. Rather than moving item by item, I’d like to give you the broad highlights of some key updates to the document from last year to this year.

I’m happy to say that, this past year, there’s actually been quite a bit of movement and progress towards our goals related to the Guided Pathways Essential Practices noted on the report. Many of the items in pillar one have been deemed “at scale,” which indicates full implementation. Those have to do with [read first and second bullet]. Other items are either at “Scaling in Progress” or “Planning to Scale” in the areas of [read list]

I think it’s bears repeating that, considering our many challenges we’ve been facing as a college community, this progress is noteworthy and something I’m really proud of and which is a direct result of so many lending hands to lift ideas into successful implementation. These really incredible progress markers only exist because of the generous and genuine collaboration that you all and so many around the college have engaged in.

You’ll notice on the report that there are some repeated challenges throughout, namely COVID and the impact its had on our ability to progress within timelines established pre-pandemic. There is definitely language that speaks to our technology challenges. And, lastly, we’ve indicated the need for updated guidance, resources, and information from the Chancellor’s Office. As you may know, we’re on the last year of our Guided Pathways grant funding. Though we know that the state has approved a second round of similar funding for Guided Pathways to continue, we still are waiting for information from the state to confirm that that funding will be available to colleges across the system. And right now, not only do we not know if we’ll receive that second round of funds, we don’t how much, or what the process is for requesting that funding. We’re hoping to receive that information sooner rather than later, but we’ve included that request in several areas of this reporting document.
