Everyday Procedures

  • Arrive 15 minutes early...

  • Half days start at 10:42 am (HS & MS), please arrive by 10:45am
  • Half days Elem. start at 12:15, please arrive by 12 noon.
  • Read Lesson Plans Before Students Arrive
  • If lesson plans are missing or incomplete ask a neighboring teacher or the office. Be prepared...ask earlier than later.
  • Check the schedule (lunch, planning, duties, connectivity)
  • Please be present and greet the students in the hallways and classrooms as they arrive and enter in all GCSD buildings.

Everyday Procedures

  • confidentiality, any information shared must not be repeated!
  • use common sense: “Mrs. Jones always lets us…”
  • students do not leave before the bell
  • Limit bathroom and nurse visits to emergencies and use hall passes, and use the sign-out sheet
  • Limit trips to the water fountain to fill water bottles

Attendance Procedures

  • When you arrive, stop in the office and pick up a key to the classroom and attendance sheets for the day and sign the sub book.
  • Take attendance at the beginning of each period and send the attendance sheet to the attendance clerk in the main office. This is especially important first period as it establishes absences/tardies for the day (in lieu of homeroom).

Emergencies and the Nurse

    • Know The Escape Route (MS TAKE RED BINDER)
    • Map posted in the classroom, SRO, Rob will be presenting the drill procedures.
    • Procedures During A Fire Drill
    • Shut lights off, close doors and windows
    • Account for every student, follow escape route QUIETLY
    • (ES & MS zero voice) out the designated door to the designated area, wait for announcement to return to building.
    • Procedure for Emergency Drills (Lock Down, Shelter in Place)Look for the rainbow flip chart in each building.
    • When To Send To The Nurse
      • When a student is feeling sick or has a cut
      • For prescribed medication
    • all students sent to the nurse need a pass signed by you, including date & time. If the student is feeling dizzy, send another student with him/her.)

What To Do ?

    • Cell Phones: Not allowed in ES or MS
    • No Belly shirts, midriff, or hats,caps, and hoodies worn at school
    • Use of the Internet: Not for sub personal use
    • Treat students respectfully and expect that of them
    • If In Doubt ..Ask a peer teacher/aide
    • Follow lesson plans to the best of your ability
    • Keep notes for the teachers return
    • Lock the classroom door when you leave
    • SUBSTITUTES: are not to be on cell phones during classes or when students are in the classroom! PLEASE. You are ROLE MODELS for our students...

Student Boundaries:

  • Insist on a respectful address: Be conscious of relationships and interactions outside of school, friendly, not friends!
  • Avoid “friending” student you meet while you are subbing.
  • Be careful of what is posted on social media (think about your privacy settings).

Social Media:

  • Be careful of what you post, even when not directly related to school
  • Teachers and staff are thought of as role models in the community. There are many stories online about teachers released from their positions regarding posts that community members found inappropriate. “Don’t be the story!”
  • There are NO pictures allowed via cell phones and, or any posted on any media website, ever!

Discipline Actions:

  • Verbal warning= “please stop talking”
  • Proximity, stand next to...
  • Note left for teacher regarding: problem(s)/concern(s)
  • Referral form is in the office, fill out and turn into the office, as soon as possible. Let administration know immediately.
  • Send out: send the student to the office
    • call office to let them know that the student is on their way and follow up with referral form

Discipline Referral Expectation:

  • Write referral on discipline form provided
    • do not include other student names
    • write exactly what the student said
    • avoid judgments: write objective statements, ie. Bill had inappropriate behavior or was disrespectful and explain. (facts only)
    • Primary responsibility is to REPORT incidents to administration and keep confidential

Working with Students:

  • Don’t take their misbehavior personally
  • Do your best not to get angry
  • If you reach your “breaking point” send them out and call office to let them know
  • Give students a fresh start each day
  • Sometimes an unexpected question can

provide a moment for reflection and de-escalation

Blood borne Pathogen Training: VECTOR TRAINING, online

  • The main disease concerns are Hepatitis B, C and HIV/AIDS
    • Hepatitis B is the most contagious
  • Hepatitis B can survive outside the body for 7 days.
  • Hepatitis C symptoms include fever, dark-colored urine and clay colored bowel movements
  • Hepatitis B and C can be carried by people even though they do not show symptoms
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV may have no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms until 1-2 weeks after exposure, incubation period is 10-12 years, and those infected may have opportunistic infections also. (TB, etc)
  • AIDS symptoms: Enlarged lymph nodes, fatigue, fever, persistent yeast infections, short term memory loss, weight loss, or enlarged liver/spleen
  • Tests are available from your doctor- any questions, ask the school nurse.
  • You can obtain a copy of the Exposure Control Plan from the nurse or webpage

  • GCS follows : Universal precautions, treat every body fluid as if it is infectious
  • Any body fluids should be considered potentially infectious-wear gloves
  • If a person is bleeding and can deal with it themselves, encourage them to do so
  • Wash hands immediately following any exposure, if when wearing gloves
  • Eye wash stations are in the nurses’ offices in each building
  • Using PPE (Personal Protective devices), such as gloves, face shields, are required. These are located in a small ziplock bag in each classroom. Notify the nurse when the items have been used.
  • Sharps containers and regulated medical waste containers are located in the nurse’s office.
  • GCSD will provide a Hepatitis B vaccine to you or you may decline
  • Following an exposure you will be provided an immediate post-exposure medical evaluation, at no cost to you, See the head nurse. (confidential)

Dignity for All Students Act: DASA

  • applies to public schools
  • considers student to student harassment
  • considers staff to student harassment
  • involves students 21 years of age and younger
  • does not apply to incidents that occur off school property and outside of school supervision unless there is a “substantial disruption” to school

  • It is important to keep in mind that the intent of the law is to protect all students. For example, while height is not specifically addressed by the law, a student harassed for being short or tall would also be protected.
  • All of the above, except weight, sexual orientation and gender identity were covered under previous federal and state statutes.

Types of Harassment Behaviors:

  • Physical: hitting, punching, tripping, spitting, kicking, pushing, scratching, pinching, damaging or stealing property.
  • Verbal: name calling, teasing, taunting, making offensive/discriminating remarks, verbally threatening/intimidating.
  • Social/Emotional/Relational: excluding or threatening to exclude, spreading rumors, gossiping, ostracizing, alienating, using threatening looks or gestures, extortion.
  • Cyberbullying: use of internet, cellphone or other technology to harass and intimidate.

Bullying is a type of harassment:

  • An intentional act of aggression, based on an imbalance of power or perceived imbalance of power, that is meant to harm a victim either physically or psychologically.
  • Usually occurs repeatedly and over time, however can sometimes be identified in a single event.

Staff Reporting: Report Harassment

  • Harassment means the creation of a hostile environment by conduct or by verbal threats, intimidation or abuse that has or would have the effect of unreasonably and substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance, opportunities or benefits, or mental, emotional or physical well-being; or conduct, verbal threats, intimidation or abuse that reasonably causes or would reasonably be expected to cause a student to fear for his/her physical safety; such conduct, verbal threats, intimidation or abuse includes but is not limited to conduct, verbal threats, intimidation and abuse based on a person’s actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice,disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex.
  • Report your concern, face to face, to the administration/counselor, and note it to the teacher.

  • Chromebooks & iPads: access to internet for

subs. See the building secretary on the first day.

  • initial login: lastname.firstname password: gv123456
  • Elmo, LCD projector, Smartboard, TV, Clear Touch Screen, Chromebook, laptop, desktop, Top Cat speaker system, and kajeet are some devices used in GCSD classrooms.
  • students in all 3 buildings have one-to-one technology access, unless that privilege removed for discipline or parent request.

Sub financial reimbursement...

Substitute Teachers/Teaching Assistants/Tutors/Aides

  • Substitute Teacher training will be held prior to starting.
  • Vector training required and shadow of 2 hrs. at MS building.
  • Applicants will require fingerprint clearance through NYSED.

  • Pay: $125/day for certified teachers; $110/day for teaching assistants; $110./day for uncertified teachers; $15.00/hour for aides; $12.50/hour + mileage for tutors.

  • High School and Middle School full day schedule is 7:20 - 2:10; half day ends/starts at 11:00am.
  • Middle School report at 7:30, High school report at 7:10
  • Elementary School full day schedule is 8:50 - 3:45; half day ends/starts at 12:15.
  • Elementary report at 8:30 for teachers, 8 am for aides.

COVID PROTOCOL...

  • If anyone is willing to have their vaccination cards copied and sent over to Tatia Kennedy, Superintendent’s office that would be great; if not, you will have to provide it to us at some point or be put on the weekly testing list.

  • Do not come to school if you are sick, let the office where you are to sub know by leaving a message, so they know that you can not sub and adjust the job in frontline.
