Identify the object or outcome

This is an online platformer game. It has a main user interface, that shows the number of player lives (deaths), game levels, Y-Velocity. There are Instructions on how to play the game, a section of Notes and Credits, and another section to leave Comments.

Describe the object or outcome

List all of the functions and purpose of the outcome. Describe what the outcome looks like, including the features or properties - use words like colour, shape, form, texture, size, scale, detail, proportion. List what materials and components the outcome is made from.

Describing is telling the reader about what it is / what it looks like. Applying the information is when we describe who is involved / what we do with it / when we use it – describe and apply need to be in context. It seems that "describe" is more often used when you try to visualize something.

Describe the object or outcome

It looks like someone is creating a game using a game developer website called scratch. This person is using different types of codes like motion, event, variable codes and etc. And each code has its own colour that represent it. From what I can see in the screenshot below, it looks like the game has five levels that the users need to complete to finish the game and if you lose, you can restart the game. Each column of code always starts with a yellow colour code which represents an event code.

Describe the object or outcome

The game is multi-levelled with eleven levels, as shown in the Stage section of the game.

The game has a player sprite in the form of a round black and white soccer ball, and green platforms on the level for the ball to move on, and is set onto a black backdrop.

The instructions indicate that common online game inputs such as the arrow keys for direction, and the space key to jump, will allow the player to move in various directions.

The game has been made using drag and drop blocks to enable various functions to be performed within the game.

Explain how various features, materials or components of the game enable the game to be effective, or why these variables are suitable to be used.

Explain how the game works. What functions do the various parts of the game have and how do they work together?

Explain the object or outcome

This game should look eye-catching and appealing because there are a multitude of free online games available to play, and the appearance of the game should entice people to want to try it.

The game needs to be simple enough to play in the beginning levels, to enable players to develop skills to overcome challenges as the game progresses.

The blocks are a simplistic and intuitive way of coding, that does not require an extensive knowledge of coding or computer science, in order to develop the game. The Y-Velocity codes for the player sprite, enables the sprite to jump up and down, and the Right-arrow and Left-arrow sensing codes, enable the player sprite to move direction within the game.

It is an example of a simple multi-level platform game, for game developers to follow.

Discuss why you think the game is as it is

The game is probably relatively straightforward to use in terms of the user inputs and game functions, because the game instructions are simply written, and suggests that the game developer has trialled the game multiple times, in order to ensure that the game works.

The game gets progressively more difficult once the player reaches the fourth level. This happens when the number of obstacles within a level increases, and also when the obstacles within each level are strategically placed to make the level more challenging.

The contrasting colours of the backdrops and the platforms, is an advantage as this enables the player to distinguish between the game challenges the scenes in each level, to allow the player the chance to clock each level in the game.

It is a basic game concept that is often used in game development.

A multi-level platformer game made using the Scratch application is an excellent choice because game users are familiar with the common game functions within platformer games. Platformer games have been around for a long time, dating back as far as the 1970s, early 1980s. This includes Donkey Kong, an arcade game created by Nintendo and released in July 1981.

How would people use this game? How would you make this game more user friendly?

How could you improve the game? - talk about shape, size, materials, how it is used etc.

How do you see games like this one changing in the future? Explain why you think this.

To defend. To give a satisfactory reason or excuse for something done.

To add a sense of realism and interest to the game I would change the soccer ball sprite into a person. This would make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye and a person as the sprite is a good choice because players will be able to connect to themselves within the game, if they can visualise themselves as the player.

Whilst avid game users may have the skills to play either game comfortably, the skills required to develop both types of games is vastly different, and also requires different types of software and computer coding knowledge and experience.

If time is not a constraint, and you have a sound understanding and knowledge of computer coding, developing a Virtual World game as opposed to a Platformer game, may be a feasible option.

The multi-level platformer game and virtual world game, both include the use of players (sprites or avatars), challenges, levels etc. However, the way in which both games are created by game developers, and also played, by game users is vastly different.

The Platformer Game is far more intuitive for game developers using the drag and drop system, whereas the Virtual World game requires a greatly and more comprehensive skill level for game developers to produce a game that functions well.

The ideal multi-level game to create for beginner or inexperienced game developers, is a 2D Platformer Game using the Scratch application.

The 2D Platformer game can be made relatively quickly, trialled with users, and changes made to various game components such as the sprites, backdrops, challenges etc, to make it more appealing for game users.

The Virtual World Game is not ideal as a a multi-level game to create for beginner or inexperienced game developers, because it requires more time, and a high level of game development knowledge and coding skills to create an effective game that functions well.

To put it briefly, the best multi-level game to create for keen game developers is a 2D Platformer game, made eye-catching sprites and backdrops that will appeal to the target audience.
