Mrs. Lloyd’s

class news

February is a short month that I know will fly by. Here’s an update on our learning in Grade One. Thank you for all you do to support your child’s learning. Have a great February!

Throughout the month of February, we will continue to meet the following objectives:

  • I can print with spaces between my words.
  • I can write a sentence with capital letters and periods.
  • I can use letter sounds to help read words.
  • I can identify the main character in a story.
  • I can sequence a story by putting events in order.

Our stories this month will focus on the themes of friendship and kindness. Beginning in January, we added themed writing days to our weekly routine, and this will carry on into February.

  • Make Magic Monday: Students are given a shape, turn it into something creative, and then write about it.
  • Tell Me Tuesday: We discuss a question (for example, “What did you eat for breakfast?”) and students write about anything they want to share.
  • Wonder Wednesday: Students are shown an image, and together we talk about what we see, think, and wonder. Students then write about the image.
  • Think It Thursday: Students unscramble a sentence. During this activity, we focus on printing neatly, using lines, and writing letters at the correct size.
  • Fix It Friday: Students find and correct errors in a sentence. Printing, line use, and letter size are emphasized.

Sentence starters are available to support students, but using them is optional.

We will also continue practicing weekly phonics skills, spelling words, and our home reading program. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Our work on patterns and sorting took a little longer than expected. This month we will focus on comparing numbers (equal to, less than, greater than) and begin exploring addition.

Social Studies

Mrs. Lloyd’s

class news

This month in Social Studies, we are exploring how people work together to meet their needs and wants and how goods and services are exchanged. Time permitting, we will also look at ways people contribute to their communities and learn about the roles and responsibilities of different groups and organizations.

Science

We will finish our unit on Winter and begin learning about energy, as well as how objects and animals

move. We are excited for our in-school field trip, “A Day at the Racetrack,” on February 3rd from 1–3 PM. During this activity, students will explore energy by investigating the direction, pathway, and speed of moving objects and animals.
