Standardization Highlights

  • General agreement that some standardization is necessary for consistency – but how far this can be taken (or needs to be taken) remains debatable

  • Driving force behind need varies (transparency, regulatory) – albeit thematically similar�
  • Certification can only work if there is some form of standard to certify against �
  • Existing PCRs allow each industry to ‘write their own rules’ – this can create some inconsistencies between CCU sectors/products

  • Variations in data (foreground, background) can undo any work that a standardized method achieves�
  • There is a need for a neutral party third-party to manage this

Social Impact Assessment

  • It was generally agreed that including assessments in the social dimension is valuable, and that it can be helpful to decision makers

  • There was hope that SIA or S-LCA may be able to bring increased transparency and societal support for CCU companies

  • Significant challenges remain to be addressed: scope, data, when is it appropriate to deploy S-LCA (fuzziness)?, what should indicators look like (scores, reported figures)?

  • Separating technology/process decisions from business management decisions may help for this audience
