The Challenge

Our challenge nowadays isn’t “How to go Space” anymore, but it becomes “How to discover the Space”.

And the first challenge in that is “Can the Seeds and the Plants also travel to Space?

Which means that Can the plants face all problems and circumstances in the space and beats them to grow there???

The Problem

  • Plants cannot grow in the natural environmental and circumstances of the space.

  • The obstacles the plant face there:
  • Absence of gravity
  • Absence of sunlight
  • Absence of
  • Increase leaves’ temperature
  • Disturbance of transportation system

  • The plant is a main factor in the human life as it consider a source of Food and Oxygen, and because of its absence in the space astronauts had to replace it with Dried food and Oxygen tanks that need to refill from time to time, which make the Long Space Flights something difficult if not impossible.

All Solutions always aim to create an artificial ecosystem simulated to the one on the Earth to provide the plant with the suitable circumstances that grow in, including these essential factors :

  1. Gravity
  2. Sun
  3. Water and Minerals

1. Gravity

Our Solution essentially based on replace the Earth gravity with an Artificial Gravity, That totally generated from the concept of the Centrifugal Force

according to the following equation:

where (a) is the circular acceleration, (w) is the angular velocity and (r) is the radius.

The Centrifugal Force model generate a net force that can by calculations simulate the Earth gravity with respect to the Plant, which in turn will re-organise its vital activities as if it were really exposed to the gravity of the Earth.

Our Solution

2. Sun

Sun is an essential factor to be reached either as a source of life for the plant or as a source of energy for the whole unit system of planting.

So first as a source of life for the plant, as we know the plant need the sunlight during the photosynthesis process and to be more specific it absorbs the red wavelength and the blue wavelength, so we use Magenta color LEDs (as all previous solutions) to provide the plant with the wavelength light it needs.

Second as a source of energy, To avoid that the units of the centrifugal force, that will be responsible for planting, consume more energy from the energy of the whole spaceship that are need for other essential process in it. We resort to use Solar panels to provide these units with a separated energy source that will be enough for the whole operation of generating a Centrifugal force.

3. Water & Minerals

Water and Minerals are main sources of life for the plant.

That is why we propose Poeta device which can produce water from the moisture (water vapor) in the air, that the device collect, with the presence of sunlight as an energy source through the solar panels. So by that, we will be re-using the same water that the plant absorbs from the soil and then through respiration it return it to the air.

Also, the Minerals and the Salts needed by the plant will be provided in the soil that the plant grow in it, and they will be maintained in the soil because of the Artificial Gravity we used.
