They are of two types:

  • Analog Vernier Calipers
  • Digital Vernier calipers

LEAST COUNT OF VERNIER CALIPERS

The smallest value up to which an instrument can measure is called least count of the instrument.

WORKING OF VERNIER CALIPERS

  • First of all find the error if any in the measuring Instrument.

  • This error is known as Zero Error of the instrument.
  • In order to find accurate measurement this error should be overcome, which is known as Zero error correction.

  • TO FIND ZERO ERROR:
  • Close the jaws of Vernier Caliper.
  • If the zero of the vernier scale coincide with the zero of main scale, then there is no zero error.

TO FIND ZERO ERROR:

  • Close the jaws of Vernier Caliper.
  • If the zero of the vernier scale does not coincide with the zero of main scale, then there is zero error.

POSITIVE ZERO ERROR

if zero line of vernier scale is on the right side of the zero of the main scale

NEGATIVE ZERO ERROR

will be negative if zero line of vernier scale is on the left side of zero of the main scale.
