GOAL 7: Solve Problems

Choice F:

“AAC: Finding Ancestral …” (video series)

- Watch Finding Lost or Hidden … from the start to 0:22 to discuss photo resources on Cyndi’s List.

- Watch from 0:23 to the end and discuss photo resources available on the DeadFred site.

“GC: Dating Your Photographs …”

- Read or summarize the second paragraph for research tips; there are quite a few included.

- In “1: Internal Details” review the types of objects in a photo that can give research clues.

- In “5: Costumes” review and discuss the bullet point items.

- In “7: Family Events” discuss the last paragraph and emphasize that multiple pieces of information need to work together to form a conclusion.

PhotoTree site (for old photographs)

- Open the PhotoTree site. Click the History tab at the top and briefly review the various types of photographs produced in the 1800s. You may want to magnify your view, as the type on the website is rather small.

- Click the Identification tab at the top and scroll down “Photograph Characteristics.” Briefly review the information in the table, to illustrate the qualities of each photograph type.

- Click the Case Study tab at the top. Summarize the information on the page, in the Front Side, Clues, and Explanations columns, that explains how clues were found in a watch photograph. (This will take some study, to shorten the info and bring out the important points.)

- On the current page, scroll down to “Clues to Our Photo Comparison” and briefly describe how the conclusions were reached.

In the “Past Cases” column (far right), scroll over the list and recommend the links for further study.

“AF: How to Use …”

- Scroll down to the 1840’s section and summarize the main points for identifying women’s dress styles in that decade..

- Summarize the points in each of the other sections, in 1850’s through 1890’s.

“FTM: Finding Photo Clues …”

- Scroll down to the photograph with the numbers on it. Click the photo to enlarge, and explain that each number refers to a point of evidence in the article. Click the back arrow to return to the article.

- Briefly review each of the six reference points. Scroll up to the numbered photo when necessary or enlarge it when needed.

“FTM: Quiz …”

- Scroll down to the second photo in the article and explain that there is a quiz with five multiple-choice questions about the details in the photo.

- Scroll to the first question, review it and the answers, then scroll back up to the large photo to give time for analyzing details.

- Follow a similar pattern with questions 2 - 5.

- Scroll down to the answers section and read or summarize the first answer; then scroll back up to the photo to show the evidence.

- Follow a similar pattern with answers 2 - 5.

“AF: Identifying Old Photographs …”

- Scroll down to Identifying Who Is in the Photo.

- Review and discuss the main point in each of the bold headings for identification tips.
