Welcome to the ninth feature of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory - TFI 1.9.

When implementing the features of the TFI it is important to keep the long-term goal in mind.

PBiS staffs believe that when all adults model, teach and enforce a set of clearly defined pro-social skills using Proactive, Instructive and Restorative discipline approaches, that 80-90% of students will be able to successfully demonstrate the behaviors that lead to academic and social success. The idea is simple, but implementation is complex. Each feature in Tier 1 of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) assists schools in developing the systems and policies to support that goal.

In TFI 1.9, the community develops a formal set of procedures which clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of all staff to consistently reinforce the prosocial behaviors which were defined in TFI 1.3 and taught in TFI 1.4.

Big Idea

Tasks to accomplish TFI 1.9 include:

We create a culture where we reinforce skills that lead to social and behavioral success.

I find that greeting students by name with a smile as they come into class helps all of us have a better day.

A voluntary training for new teachers/staff has been added to the calendar. The topic will be: The Power of Adult Attention.

Staff Please Note: the Eagle’s Nest will be open for twenty extra minutes on Friday so students can cash in their Eagle Wings prior to winter break.

Now when students earn an Eagle Wing, I make sure to also pair it with specific feedback so that they know what they did well; it’s been really effective.

The School-Wide Acknowledgement Policy has been updated to include information on the new platform we’re using to award and track Eagle Points.

The Tier 1 Climate & Culture Team randomly surveyed a group of 20 students from all grades and found that 70% of them had received at least one Eagle Wing in the last month!

In order to consistently deliver high rates of positive feedback to all students, the TFI requires schools to establish a tangible reinforcement system (or token economy). The Tier 1 Climate & Culture Team may decide to form a subcommittee to develop that system and write a set of procedures to assist staff in answering the following types of questions:

What is the name of the school-wide tangible or currency?
How do students earn them? For what behaviors?
What’s the process for awarding a tangible? Should it always be paired with behaviorally specific feedback?
How many tangibles should staff typically distribute per day/week?
When, where, and how will students redeem the tangibles?

It will be important, as the Team or subcommittee creates a tangible reinforcement system, to seek input from all stakeholders, staff, and families to ensure that the reinforcers and recognitions chosen are relevant and meaningful.
