Mission

The Radical Monarchs create opportunities for young girls and gender expansive youth of color to form fierce friendship, celebrate their identities and contribute radically to their communities.

Vision

The Radical Monarchs empower young girls and gender expansive youth of color so that they stay rooted in their collective power, brilliance and leadership in order to make the world a more radical place.

Becoming a Radical Troop Leader/Assistant

  • 3 year volunteer position
  • Co-facilitate with a 3 person Troop team
  • Plan and lead troop meetings twice a month
  • Lead the next generation of social justice changemakers
  • Youth development and facilitation skills
  • Create tangible change in your communities

Becoming a Radical Troop Leader

  • Each troop has 2 RTLs (Radical Troop Leaders) and 1 RTA (Assistant)
  • RTLs are responsible for the facilitation of troop meetings and administering the curriculum
  • Expected commitment of ~5 hours per week that the troops meet. Troops meet twice a month, 10 hours/month

Becoming A Radical Troop Assistant

  • Radical Troop Assistants are responsible for handling the communications and logistics of the troop.
  • Emailing/calling families with updates and info
  • Keeping track of troop dues, fundraising efforts
  • Other logistical matters
  • Expected commitment of about 5 hours per week that the troops meet

Troop Structure

  • Troops are together for 3 years
  • Made up of up to 20 Monarchs ages 8-11 (grades 3-5)
  • Led by 3 volunteer adults (2 Radical Troop Leaders and 1 Radical Troop Assistant)
  • Expected to earn 3 badges per year minimum
  • Expected to meet twice a month for Badge Unit sessions, they earn one badge at a time
  • Troops meet during the academic year September - June
  • Program breaks during summer and winter

Badge Unit Structure

Unit Length: ~ 3 months

Meetings: 2 times per month on weekends minimum with potential for more social gathering organized by RM families.

Unit Parts:

    • Grounding Session (KLW)

    • Experiential Learning Workshops/Actions

    • Badge Awards Ceremony

Each Radical Monarch year will consist of a 3-Part Cycle. The participants will earn their badges through curriculum completion and civic engagement. Youth can earn 3 badges/year

from the following pillars:

In each Radical Badge unit, the participants will engage in 3 types of learning experiences.

Participants will learn through a variety of intentional classroom experiences and strategies to improve one's ability to attain and apply knowledge.

Participants will engage in intentional excursions that will expose them to learning about social justice and self empowerment focused topics.

Participants serve in ongoing community actions and gatherings to model the power of collective impact.

Pachamama

Justice Badge

  • Radical Monarchs will experience and deepen their knowledge of local public outdoor and natural spaces (park, gardens, farms, waterfronts etc.)and local flora and fauna
  • Radical Monarchs will deepen their understanding of the culturally specific origins of Pachamama and local indigenous history
  • Radical Monarchs will learn and critically think about environmental justice
  • Radical Monarchs will learn what local social justice movements are doing to protect natural spaces in the area

  1. Quarterly Zoom RTLA Learning Community Convenings
  2. Troop Meeting Observations & Feedback
  3. Weekly availability as needed to answer emerging questions from RTLAs via Slack.

Troop Dues

Every year each troop is required to pay dues that cover the minimum cost of running the troop.

Families pay tuition that is based on a sliding scale and the remaining amount is covered through fundraising.

What we are looking for

  • 2-3 troops in Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York

  • Each troop team needs 2 Volunteer Radical Troop Leaders and 1 Volunteer Radical Troop Assistant

  • Volunteers must have deep-rooted connections in their communities, and experience working with Monarch aged youth (8 - 11 yrs)
