What are rivers and streams?

Rivers and streams are bodies of flowing water that travels in one direction. They start at headwaters, and move down towards the leg or an opening.

Temperature tends to be lower at the headwaters.
Water is also clearer and more oxygenated at the head as well.
Rivers and streams fulfill runoff and help the water cycle.
You’ll find fish that need less oxygen towards the base of the river, and you’ll find fish that are freshwater and more oxygen-dependent at the head.

Producers

Various plants and algae can be found in slower parts of the river, or towards the middle. They are the main producers. However, some plants have stronger roots and anchor themselves to the bottom. They exist in the faster parts of the streams or rivers. Moss is also another common producer and tends to live on wet rocks.

Consumers

Certain fish and amphibians normally live in rivers and streams. However, certain mammals live there as well, such as platypi and otters.
