Uniform Policy for students in Year 7-11.

The SIS uniform items are listed on the ESF uniform site.
Students must wear the clothing purchased from the uniform website. No other clothing including hoodies purchased outside of the uniform website are to be worn inside the school.

Gender

On the central procurement ordering website, the uniform items are divided into male and female, as is the case across ESF. The reason for this is due to the sizing and cut of certain items, which have been carefully designed based on feedback from the ESF community.
However, it is important that the SIS uniform policy is inclusive of gender orientation. What this means is that students can opt to wear any of the South Island uniform items listed on the website regardless of their gender.
Religious/Cultural Dress
Article 9 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights protects the right to “Manifest one’s religion or beliefs.”
We are sensitive to and demonstrate a respect for the needs of different cultures, races and religions. Any religious variations to our uniform/jewellery must still comply with our health and safety requirements. If students wish to wear a variation of our uniform because of their religion or beliefs then permission is needed from the relevant Head of Year/House.

PE Kit/School uniform
Students are permitted to wear either PE kit or school uniform and may also mix and match items from PE kit/Uniform.
For PE lessons students need to wear the full PE kit.

The Rules on Shorts
The shorts/skorts above are all permitted as they are available on the ESF uniform website for SIS.
These Shorts/Skorts are also permitted. Whilst they are not available on the uniform website, they are permitted as they are the old design and were available at the recent PTA sale of old uniform items. Some students have inherited these from older siblings. Any items which used to be part of the SIS official uniform are allowed.

School Shoes
School shoes need to be black or/and white in colour.
Trainers are permitted as part of the school uniform but they must be black or/and white.
For PE, trainers should be suitable for the sport to be played, with sufficient support and grip. Coloured trainers are permitted only during PE lessons or Inter-house.
Boots are not permitted.

Jewellery/Hair/Nails
Jewellery | Jewellery should be minimal for reasons for health and safety and to avoid loss. Teachers may request for certain jewellery to be removed during lessons. | ||
Hair | Hair should be clean. For some subjects, students will be asked to tie their hair back for health and safety reasons. Hair colour should have predominantly natural tonings. Unnatural dyed hair is not permitted. Generally hair dye contains chemicals which might be unsafe for children. | ||
Nails | For health and safety reasons, nails must be clean and of a length to enable participation in sport or other activities and lessons. Acrylic, gel or stick-on nails are not permitted. Some chemicals in certain gel nail varnish can be a health hazard. Some subjects cannot permit the wearing of nail varnish. | ||
Hairstyles, makeup and nail varnish should be appropriate for a school environment where everyone is a role model and ambassador of the school. There are also Health and Safety requirements to be met in some subjects.
Health a Safety
If a student is in breach of the uniform rules and this breach compromises health and safety the student might be asked not to participate in certain activities in or outside of lesson time until the uniform concern is rectified.

South Island does not permit chewing gum in campus or during any school activity.
Inter-House
When students have inter-house activities they are permitted to wear their House shirt for the duration of the day.
Ideally students should wear PE kit for PE and Inter-House shirt for Inter-House.
