Volunteer Levels Overview

Level 1

Staff supervised, visit school one time

Level 2

Staff supervised, regular student contact, TB and AB1913 Child Abuse Training

Level 3

Unsupervised time with students, no driving students required fingerprints, TB and AB1913 Child Abuse Training

Unsupervised time with students and allowed to drive, required fingerprints, TB, required driving documents and AB1913 Child Abuse Training.

Level 4

Visitor vs. Volunteer

  • Visitors

Limited, supervised, or no student contact

  • Volunteers

Direct student contact on repeated occasions, require screening

Defined by Ed Code 45125.1(c)

TB Clearance

  • Required for Levels 2–4
  • Screenings at SLO County Health Dept or your provider
  • Clearance valid for 4 years

Volunteer Application Process

  1. Pick up at school site or download the volunteer packet at slcusd.org
  2. Complete all forms
  3. Submit to your school office with supporting documentation.

Volunteer Code of Conduct

  • Sign in and wear ID
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Never be alone with a student
  • No personal gifts or private contact

Confidentiality & Reporting

  • Report immediately to Teacher or Principal if a student discloses:
      • Abuse
      • Illegal activity
      • Harm to self or others

Inclusive Classrooms

  • Use inclusive language: kids, students, people, person, parent, sibling, relative, caregiver
  • Respect identity and background-Respect all expressions of gender, and avoid making assumptions about the gender of any student
  • Be aware of visible and invisible needs
  • Support fair, kind interactions
