PROJECT FIVE

2 of 42

Aim

The aim of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to make use of the skills, knowledge and understanding developed through the previous units to complete a creative media project. This will involve some self directed learning and allow you to begin to clarify a role you might like to explore in greater depth.

Background

Journalism can cover a range

of disciplines, such as writing,

interviewing, sub-editing,

podcasting and designing.

Most journalism content is

produced to be consumed on a

mobile phone, so knowledge of

the concise writing style needed for the internet, search engine optimisation and social media are important skills.

Senario

In this project you will originate and develop your own package of content on a theme.

You will create three pieces of

content that all explore one of the following themes:

  • Community
  • Culture
  • Heroes
  • Sustainability
  • Beginnings

Each piece of content must include an interview.

You will plan how you will produce your content to meet a specified deadline.

You will research, consider

production requirements, plan and organise the production process.

Project Title: Final Major Project

Tutors: Bethan Hyatt

Start Date: W/c

Deadline: W/c

Unit 8 Learning outcomes

The student will:

1. Understand the requirements of a creative media production project.

2. Be able to use research methods to inform ideas for creative media production.

Project Five: Tasks

0

Reflective journal and evaluation. (8.4.1, 8.4.2)

Throughout this project you will need to keep a reflective journal (you can do this on your blog).

You will do this after four major points throughout the project: Initial research, proposal, production and at the end of the project.

Though you may find it useful to keep an ongoing diary/log of work that you are doing.

The reflective journal is your opportunity to make your assessors aware of what work you have been doing and for you to demonstrate your understanding of what effective working practice is. You must be reflective and consider how effective your work at each stage has been. When you have completed your content you need to evaluate the final work you have produced in an evaluation of around 500 words.

1

Initial Research (8.1.1)

Do research to help you define your project concept and how it fits one of the specified themes. Consider as well your target audience, content ideas, rationale. The exact content of your FMP can be discussed with your tutor.

Create and present your initial proposal to the class and gather feedback. Reflect on feedback on your initial research with a reflective journal post.

NOTE:

Your initial research will help you produce a proposal but you will continue with research throughout this final project. Make sure you continuously update your website throughout this project.

Blogs and reviews will not be accepted.

Interview rules: You MUST supply the NAME and CONTACT details of your interviewees;

Evidence of your interviews need to be uploaded to the relevant planning post.

Overall Project:

You will create three pieces of content that all explore one of the following themes:

  • Community
  • Culture
  • Heroes
  • Sustainability
  • Beginnings

You can create three written articles with InDesign layouts; three videos; three podcast episodes; or a mixture of the three. Each piece of content must include an interview

A written article must include original written copy (400 words) based on professional journalism practice.

Videos (1-2 mins in length) must demonstrate an understanding of contemporary video or audio journalism practice.

Podcasts can be longer.

Throughout your final major project, demonstrate an understanding of the role of social media within professional journalism.

Project Five: Tasks

2

Proposal (8.1.1)

Use the following subheadings:

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 100 words)

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 50 words)

Section 4: Project Action Plan & Timetable

Section 5: Proposed research Sources & Bibliography (using appropriate academic referencing)

Use the UAL template to help complete your Proposal.

3

Research portfolio (8.2.1, 8.2.2)

Produce a research portfolio to help inform the production of your work. The focus of your research will depend on your project concept. Things to research might include:

  • Textual analysis: Carry out research on other content similar to that you aim to create and identify techniques/strategies they use to tailor their content to a target audience.
  • For a written article: What content do you intend to create? Why are the people you intend to speak to relevant to the story? What secondary research do you need to complete on the subject and your interviewees?
  • For a video: Location recce, talent, equipment needs, primary experiments with camera, primary experiments with editing software. Secondary research - analysing other mobile journalism pieces on the same topic, researching different techniques for filming and editing.
  • For a podcast: Secondary research might include gathering of data and information, analysis of other podcasts similar to the one you intend to make. Primary research might include trying out different microphones we have and sound effects you may wish to add to your work.

NB Research will continue throughout this project in terms of researching solutions to problems and these should be documented in your reflective journal with sources documented effectively.

4

Planning (8.3.1)

What content do you intend to create? Who do you intend to speak to? What do you intend to ask them?

For a written feature article: contributors, interview questions, contacting and arranging interviewees, fact checking, possible angle

For a video: locations recce, A/V script, voice over script, interview questions, risk assessments

For a podcast: equipment lists, scripts, interview questions, gathering of music and sound effects needed.

5

Production (8.3.1)

Create two different posts:

1. Social Media: Record any posts you decide to upload on social media.

2. Multimedia Package: Present your multimedia package here.

Target setting

What feedback did you get?

What are you planning to do about it?

Project 1 feedback: more consistent punctuations and longer quotes.

Double check my work to ensure punctuation and grammar is correct. When using quotes from my interviews or other people use the full quote to give more context to my article.

Project 2 feedback: Ensure links work on wordpress and make sure all tasks are finished.

Ensure I am working at a faster pace so each task is finished on time. Make sure to check links on wordpress.

Project 3 feedback: Keep SPAG consistent, more enthusiasm in podcast.

Double check work to make sure spelling is accurate, given I now have more experience doing podcasts my performance will improve for the future.

Project 4 feedback: spend more time on work, changes between two script drafts were small.

Spend equal time on all pieces of work so no piece is under developed. Improve my work from original draft better.

Secondary research

The focus of your research will depend on your project concept. You should include

  • Books, articles, journals, videos and podcasts on a similar topic. Identify key features, what they do well, and techniques/strategies they use to tailor their content to a target audience.
  • Internet and social media research to find interviewees
  • Researching techniques for writing features, making films and podcasts
  • Gathering data and information about a factual topic

You will need to create extra slides to accommodate the amount of research you will need to do.

.

Articles

The Guardian ‘Unfair stereotypes about golfers’

This opinion article was perfect for my own piece of content I would create due to the fact that it's the exact same topic. I can take inspiration from the structure of this article as it is the same topic, for example I like how the writer uses anecdotes throughout to persuade the reader and add credibility to her points.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/may/19/unfair-stereotypes-about-golfers

Stitch: “How much does the average golfer spend each year”

This article compiles a list of data which shows contemporary statistics on how much golfers spend on the sport in a wide range of categories. This gives me a great source which I can use to backup my points in my opinion article. The article is very informative and targets readers who may be new to the sport by answering frequently asked questions.

https://stitchgolf.com/blogs/a/how-much-average-golfer-spend-per-year

Historic UK: “The history of golf”

This article contains some useful information that I can quote in my opinion article. For the introduction to my article I needed background information and history on the sport that I can extract data from here such as where and when the sport originated. This articles main purpose is to appeal towards people interested in golf’s history or historians.

Skysports: “Arsenal fall just short of Man City in title race but their best is yet to come under ruthless, relentless Mikel Arteta”

This feature article, with its topic sport aligns well with the feature article I will make. The article adopts an optimistic tone and is fairly biased towards Arsenal giving reasons why they will keep improving under their manager. It is structured in a way where it shifts focus from their rivals Manchester City, the manager, the current season and the future. It is clearly targeted towards Arsenal supporters reminding them that although it was a disappointing end to the season they are still making progress.

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/13137881/arsenal-fall-just-short-of-man-city-in-title-race-but-their-best-is-yet-to-come-under-ruthless-relentless-mikel-arteta

Psychologies magazine

This magazine shows lots of article layouts. I have took inspiration from one page in particular for my opinion article because of the column which shows public voice. This matches up exactly to the vox pop answers I collected.

Printed material

Women's GolfJournal: “Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden- A History”

This article illustrates the history of women's involvement in the sport over a timeline. It describes the prejudices they felt and still feel today It also includes key quotes from female and male figures in history on the subject but also from newspapers. Due to this the writer not only appeals the work to a female audience but also an audience intrigued by the history of golf. This article is great for me to take inspiration from as it covers a similar topic to my feature.

BBC Fresh: “Vox Pops: The basics”

This youtube video informs the viewer on how to successfully film and produce a VoxPop. It share some key details I can use when I film my VoxPop for my opinion article such as equipment, consent and location. The video is short formed and visual which makes it easy to understand. It is targeted towards students like myself who are inexperienced with this interviewing technique.

Videos

Kevin Stratvert: “Best Clipchamp Video Editing Tips and Tricks”

This youtube tutorial guides you through the key features of the editing software and how to use them. Some tips I took from this video and implemented in my own was how to change the dimension of your video so it is specialised for social media, the automatic captions feature and voice recording feature. The video is very visual and shows the features within the software rather than just talking about them, this makes the video a great informative watch for beginners in editing.

Flip the Lens: “10 Tips on How to Create a Powerful Video Interview”

This youtube tutorial outlines the key principles of what makes a successful interviews. It discusses what to do before and during the interview and how it should be filmed. Some of the tips I used in my video was the importance of discussing the questions beforehand so they can plan there answers, testing sound quality and choosing a suitable location. The video uses a voice over stock footage which not only audibly informs the viewer but also visually this targets the video to a younger audience who are familiar with this format.

Jon Smith: “Essential Reporting” book

This book gives a guide on how to report for beginner trainee journalists. It goes through an array of article examples and outlines what is good and bad about the grammar and structure of each. This was useful for me in my article writing as I was able to take on board some of the key information. The author structures the book in a way where it become gradually more complex which suits a less experienced reader as they can work up their confidence.

Podcast

The Women’s Golf Show: “Toddlers on tour with Katherine Perry-Hamski”

This podcast episode provided me with great insight for my feature article about a subject I am not familiar with. The podcast host interviews a women’s professional golfer about her day to day life on the course and the struggles she has with being a mother and full time golfer. I have gained good insight about the female side to the sport and have got inspiration by some of the questions the interviewer asked for my feature. It is a very casual conversation between the host and guest and is suited to an female audience keen on the in depth side of the sport on and off the course.

Primary research

The focus of your research will depend on your project concept. You should include

  • Practising interviewing skills - face to face, over the phone, over video call.
  • Practice your writing skills; working on SPAG if you need to.
  • Vox pops
  • Location recces, equipment needs, primary experiments with cameras, primary experiments with editing software.
  • Trying out different microphones, sound effects etc

You will need to create extra slides to accommodate the amount of research you will need to do.

Vox pop

- I have asked members of the public a question to gather their responses and find a general consensus for my opinion article.

Interview one

- I have completed a face to face interview with my golf instructor for the video I will produce.

Interview two

- I will interview a female golfer over a video call for my feature article.

Interviews

23 of 42

Equipment

Microphone testing

- I tested the sound quality of the voice recorder I used for my interview for my video by doing a mock interview with myself.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XiRPfAanfrA3H86LzaWvTDgsxMGGoL32/view?usp=sharing

Video audio recording

- I compared the audio of both my phone camera audio quality and my voice recorder quality. Whilst the original audio recording of my phone was decent I chose to override this audio with my voice recorder device as it has less background noise.

Editing software

- I experimented with using different editing softwares such as adobe premiere rush and splice until I came across microsoft clipchamp which I am the most comfortable with, it also has an automatic caption feature which the others didn't.

Microsoft Clipchamp

- I experimented implementing background music on my video to see whether or not it would be too distracting or if would bring the video alive, I decided to go against this as it overpowered the sound of mine and the interviewees voice.

CGP Books: Free GSCE SPaG Online 10-Minute test

I took this ten minute test which focused on many important skills required when writing grammatically correct, such as punctuation and spelling. As the test was under time pressure it was a great way to test my abilities under pressure like I am when writing articles. After I got my score I went back to the answers I got wrong to figure out why I did and how I can improve in the future

- Before going out and recording the public I experimented with the audio prior by asking the questions to myself to ensure audio quality was clear.

Reflective log 1 - proposal stage

The reflective journal is your opportunity to make your assessors aware of what work you have been doing and for you to demonstrate your understanding of what effective working practice is. You must be reflective and consider how effective your work at each stage has been. What have you done? What went well? What didn’t? What have you learnt? What will you do next or what would you do differently next time?

I began my final major project with the proposal stage, where I conducted my own initial research, slide presentation and final proposal. During my initial research I struggled with the creativity aspect of forming high quality ideas across all the themes. Although I had one idea in mind which I was passionate to base my work on, I found it challenging to find ideas I would be just as passionate to write about. To combat this in order to have a basic plan for all the themes I used the same concept of golf in multiple themes which I then altered to suit the mindmaps. The next stage of my proposal was the presentation I created which I then presented to my peers, during the creation stage of this is when I converted the vague ideas I had already made in my mind map into slides. Feedback I gained from my peers was mixed, one of my peers commented that “social media was my weakest point” and that I need to “find more thing to post”. I took this piece of feedback on board and acknowledged that I needed a more concise plan of what I am going to post on my social media to reach a wider following and to make it more interactive which can be found in my final proposal. Another piece of feedback I was given was that my interview plans “didn't seem very organised”, this will likely be due to the fact that my plan was still in progress so i had not finalised all the details needed. Since this I have however, planned out my interviews such as the date, time and person. This has taught me how important it is to stay organised and plan effectively for interviews so that my work can run parallel to my interviews and also to ensure work is finished on time. One piece of positive feedback I had gained was that my “interview ideas have links to theme” which shows that I have considered who I am going to talk to so my work is relevant and high quality. The last stage I have completed is my final proposal which was a more developed and concise version of my presentation. I took the feedback I gained from my peers to make sure this final plan was up to standard. I laid out who my target audience will be, the people I will interview and the content I will produce. Looking back this part of the planning went the best although I had to edit and change certain things like who I was going to interview.

Reflective log 2 - planning and research stage

The reflective journal is your opportunity to make your assessors aware of what work you have been doing and for you to demonstrate your understanding of what effective working practice is. You must be reflective and consider how effective your work at each stage has been. What have you done? What went well? What didn’t? What have you learnt? What will you do next or what would you do differently next time?

During the planning and research stage of my final major project I had compiled research, organised and conducted interviews for my content. The first piece of content I planned was my opinion article involving public opinion conducted by a vox pop about the stereotypical golfer. I had planned a date, time and location where it would take place. I had watched a handful of vox pops prior to the recordings to take on board the techniques I needed to follow for it to be successful. The equipment I used was my phone, a pen and paper. During my vox pop I interviewed a variety of people such as a range of ages and both genders so that the answers would be authentic from diverse perspectives so I could try and find a link between opinions of the same demographic. I feel as though the question I asked for every person was a very open one and allowed the public to use their imagination and find what their true mindset of who a stereotypical golfer is to them. Before I conducted the vox pop I planned to interview around 15 people to obtain a large sample size, however, on the day this fell a little shorter than what I had intended, as I interviewed only nine people. This was due to a lack of willingness to answer the question from most of the public I asked making it difficult to find enough people to question. To fix this dilemma in the future I would spread the vox pop across two days so more people would be approached or I could have changed location to see if people would respond differently. Whilst the audio of the recordings is fairly clear I could have used more advanced technology like a voice recorder rather than my phone for a more crisp sound.

For my video I successfully organised and filmed an interview with my golf instructor and former tour professional Jason Ripley by asking to film him at the end of my lesson. Before the interview I researched and watched interviews surrounding the topic to give me inspiration for some of the questions I would ask. I also watched a youtube video a golf course to give me ideas on some of the cinematic shots I could take for the video. I used a voice recorder to ensure the sound quality was clear, and also tested the recorder beforehand to make sure of this. During the interview I felt as though he showed interest in the questions I was asking and answered them in depth. The questions were all relevant to the topic and I had talked through them with my coach so that he would not be caught off guard and had chance to prepare answers. Visually for the video, I used the assistance of someone holding the camera so that me and the interviewee would be in frame to give a more professional feel to the interview. One thing I would change if I was to conduct the interview again is the location as it was near some golfers who were taking shots. Although this added to the environment of the video it would add unnecessary background noise sporadically throughout the recording. Instead I could have recorded the interview somewhere quieter to prevent this.

In my final piece of work, my feature I unsuccessfully emailed a journalist I was planning to interview as I was never given a response.

Reflective log 3 - production stage

The reflective journal is your opportunity to make your assessors aware of what work you have been doing and for you to demonstrate your understanding of what effective working practice is. You must be reflective and consider how effective your work at each stage has been. What have you done? What went well? What didn’t? What have you learnt? What will you do next or what would you do differently next time?

During the production stage of my FMP I produced my video, opinion article and feature article. The first piece of content I produced was my opinion article, where I had compiled the answers of my interviewees which I gathered from my voxpop. By listening back to their answers and shortening them down into smaller relevant quotes I was able to implement them into the article. The first draft I made has changed significantly compared to my final piece. When I was writing my initial draft I struggled with the layout and structure of my writing, I was unsure how to embed my quotes alongside my own opinion. Instead for my final draft I decided to separate my quotes from my writing, there was a design I found in a magazine which I used as reference for my final piece where the main body of writing is my opinion with the quotes in its own section on the side. As this is a subject I am interested and knowledgeable about I found the writing stage quite straightforward, I used anecdotes from my own personal experiences in the sport to support my argument. I found it difficult when using Adobe inDesign to create the layout as it is not a software I am familiar with so it took a while to create my article’s template. I have learnt how to structure my writing into more professional article formats using Adobe inDesign. If I was to recreate my opinion article I would make a plan of the structure as well as the content so that there was less confusion during the writing process. The second piece of content I made was my video. I used primary research to collect most of my footage, the video is composed of an interview with an ex professional golf player and an introduction which contains cinematic shots of the course where I interviewed and background information. Also to make the video more interactive I implemented images I found by secondary research on the internet which overlapped at times during the interview to make it more professional. I felt as though the editing process went quite smoothly, I had no issues in organising the clips and adding images and captions. I also imported the audio of the microphone I used for the video which made the sound quality much clearer and crisp. I did however, struggle with finding which editing software to use which in itself took longer than the editing process. I experimented with many different software such as adobe premiere rush and splice that I Disliked which was time consuming. Instead, I chose to use a software called microsoft clipchamp which was straightforward to use and also had a feature which saved a lot of time being able to automate captions so I didn't have to manually type anything in. The main weakness on the video was the introductions sound quality which although was still decent it did not match up to the standards of the microphone in the main interview, leaving the video feeling inconsistent. In the future I would use the same audio recorder as I overestimated my headphones microphone quality when I should have experimented first like I did with the microphone.
