Scope of the Group

  • Research infrastructure uptake, in particular how to define, capture, measure and evaluate the uptake, is of interest to many stakeholders (including researchers, funders, policy advocates, and DRI operators/builders) across the digital research system.
  • Key questions we are interested in include:
    • How should we define “uptake” and “Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI)”?
    • How can uptake be evaluated / assessed in a meaningful way?
    • What are the different stakeholders’ needs when it comes to documenting / reporting on uptake?
    • How can we balance these needs?

Background to this Group

  • BoF session at Research Data Alliance (RDA) Plenary 21, which showed interest in establishing an RDA group, “Uptake of Digital Research Infrastructure IG”, on this topic.
  • Interest Group session at RDA Plenary 22, in which we started to work on our Charter (now, “Statement of Work”).
  • In parallel, we held BoF sessions at eResearch Australasia in October 2023 and October 2024
  • The IG’s Statement of Work (formerly “Charter”) is currently in community review at https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/uptake-digital-research-infrastructure-ig/work-statement/?sow=169902 (https://bit.ly/3AF2SO8)
    • Please feel free to comment on the Statement of Work by 21 November 2024

Outcomes from the RDA Plenary 22 Session

  • Collaborative notes from the session: https://tinyurl.com/rdavp22dri

  • About 20 people joined the session.

  • The group worked on major components of the Charter for the proposed IG, in particular,
    • use cases,
    • objectives and outcomes,
    • timelines and milestones,
    • communities the group should engage with.

  • Scope of the group: consensus was to broaden the word “uptake” to include quantitative and qualitative aspects, and possibly consider longer term outcomes leading to impact, as well.

Outcomes from the RDA Plenary 22 Session (cont’d)

  • Suggested first outputs:
    • literature review/environmental scan of the area to guide the work of the group over time,
    • survey of different user groups to elicit / confirm their use cases and needs.

  • Agreed next steps after the session:
    • clarifying that the scope of the group includes quantitative and qualitative measures of uptake and confirming if impact will also be explored,
    • developing the group statement of work and submit it for RDA endorsement (done),
    • developing a survey based on the use cases / personas discussed and documented in the session.

Outcomes from the eResearch Australasia 2024 Session

Collaborative notes: https://t.ly/Tx660 (includes Menti responses)

About 45 people in attendance

Asked 2 questions:

  • What indicators does your organisation use to measure and understand the uptake of DRI?
    • Mostly quantitative: web analytics, number of users, downloads, publications/citations/acknowledgements
    • Some qualitative: user surveys, training and event attendance
  • What have you learnt?
    • Mixture of quantitative and qualitative metrics is needed, and focus on context
    • Discussion around using tools/techniques from other disciplines to help e.g. from communications/marketing

Overview of the Statement of Work

Currently open for review until 21 November 2024, from the IG website (https://bit.ly/3AF2SO8). All comments are greatly appreciated.

Interest Group initial work plan:

  • Definitions of “Digital Research Infrastructure” and “uptake”
  • Confirm use cases we wish to explore and questions for each use case
  • Defining and developing the outputs for the group

We’d like your input for the first two objectives today.

Overview of the Statement of Work - Outcomes

Possible outcomes from this Interest Group:

  • Agreed model for understanding DRI uptake and use
  • Higher quality evaluations due to an improved set of use and uptake metrics/measures
  • A common understanding of DRI uptake and how it is demonstrated
  • Understanding a key step in the impact pathway between DRI outputs, outcomes and impact

Are these right, have we missed anything? What is the ultimate value that this IG can deliver to RDA stakeholders?

Overview of the Statement of Work - Outputs

Possible outputs from this Interest Group:

  1. Environmental scan
    1. Survey of different user groups to elicit and validate their use cases and needs
    2. Literature review / environmental scan
  2. Typology of categories of Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI)
  3. Catalogue of qualitative and quantitative measures of uptake, as relevant for different types of stakeholders (Researchers, government, funders, operators, policy advisors)
  4. Develop recommendations for funders, providers and users of DRI on what measures of uptake may be most relevant and how to capture and track them
