The First Tortilla

Story Summary

Jade is the main character in the story.

A huge mountain was above Jade’s village.

Jade’s parents sold baskets in the market.

When the mountain spirit wakes up, the volcano pours lava down.

A humming bird told Jade to ask for rain from the Mountain spirit.

Jade gave the Mountain Spirit beans, squash, and chile powder.

The Mountain Spirit liked the gift.

Jade thought the ants carried pebbles (small rocks).

He said she can have the corn from the ants.

Then it started to rain.

Corn plants started growing.

She placed kernels in a metate.

She crushed the corn and sprinkled water on to make tortillas.

Masa is a dough.

Everyone thanked Jade and called her: “The girl who made the first tortilla.”
