THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

The UK is located in the north-west of Europe. It is situated on the British Isles. There are also several islands which are closely linked with the UK but they are not a part of it: the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The UK is separated from the mainland by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover from France.
The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The rest of Ireland is an independent country.
‘Great Britain’ refers only to England, Scotland and Wales, not to Northern Ireland.
