  • The UK is located in the north-west of Europe. It is situated on the British Isles. There are also several islands which are closely linked with the UK but they are not a part of it: the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The UK is separated from the mainland by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover from France.
  • The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The rest of Ireland is an independent country.
  • ‘Great Britain’ refers only to England, Scotland and Wales, not to Northern Ireland.
