A term used to describe films that deal with factual topics.

John Grierson, a British film-maker, defines documentary as “the creative interpretation of reality.”

Film-maker may work to persuade an audience to accept the version of a reality they offer.

“It is not just the story- it is HOW one tells the story.”

“Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to put ideas into the world.”

Documentary Film- Devices

Actuality: The term for film footage of real-life events, places and people. Actuality footage is a record of real events as they unfold.

Voice Over: The voice-over is a commentary by the documentary maker, spoken while the camera is filming or added to the soundtrack during production. Also known as the narrator.

Music: Often used to create mood or atmosphere. It might also tell a story which is relevant to the topic or have some symbolic meaning.

Interviews: A basic documentary technique.They allow people being filmed to speak directly about events, often in response to questions asked by the film-maker.

File Footage: Material obtained from a film library or archive, inserted into a documentary to show historical events or to add detail without the need for additional filming.

Captioning: Placing written text on the screen to give additional information to the viewer. Captions may be used to give names of people interviewed, to give the time or location of an event, or to provide other relevant information.

Documentary Film- Devices

Graphics: Images designed to convey an idea visually. They may be simple, such as lists of names, graphs, maps or written documents or they may be very complex, such as computer generated images of a difficult scientific concept.

Re-enactment: When real events cannot be filmed as they happen, film-makers will sometimes re-create the event.

Montage: A technique used in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.

The ACT is 3 hours long (technically 2 hours and 55 minutes). Including breaks, the exam takes 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete. If you sign up for the optional essay (the ACT Plus Writing ), the test clocks in at 3 hours and 40 minutes or just over 4 hours with breaks.

What are “coordinate adjectives”?

“Coordinate adjectives” are adjectives placed next to each other that are equal in importance.

Two tests to determine whether adjectives are coordinate are the following:

1. See whether “and” can be smoothly placed between them.

2. See whether the adjectives’ order can be reversed.

Apply these rules to the following two sentences and decide when (if any) commas are needed.

1. We saw a happy lively poodle.

2. We saw a young golden retriever.
