Where should my child be?

Again, this relates to the Stonefields School reading progressions. If your child tracks against the criteria - they are usually on target to reach the National Standard by the time they reach 1 year at school

Generally, the children are ‘expected’ to move a level a month in order to reach level 12 (or green) by the time they have completed 1 year at school. Therefore, once your child has had 6 months at school they should be at yellow (levels 6, 7 and 8).

When do you “do” literacy at school?

All day!

We have adjusted our timetable in the morning to prioritise literacy, as a result of our assessment. We make specific links to all cross-curricular areas!

Practical Tips

  • Government leaflets - a great resource. After 1 year at School | After 2 years at School
  • Feedback - praise their attempts
  • Importance of oracy talk comes prior to reading the book.
  • Link reading book to an experience something tangible authentic, i.e. when at Kelly Tarltons, reading the labels finding the first sound having a go sounding out.
  • Reading and writing, is just something we do part of everyday life. Model being a reader at home reading a letter, a paper. Writing a shopping list sending an email text etc
  • How long should we read for? How long is a piece of string - as long as reading is a positive experience, that’s up to you.
  • Adult/ caregiver modelling of reading and writing- books, recipes, letters, play eyespy in the back of the car retell your favourite stories
  • Please read to your child and ask questions in your home language, research shows this supports their literacy skills
