GOAL 5: Emigration / Immigration

Choice A:

“FS: Tennessee Emigration and Immigration”

- Scroll down to Background and briefly review the bullets as a historical framework for immigration.

- In Immigration Records briefly review the information in “Passenger Lists” and “Passports.”

- Scroll down to Tennessee Migration Routes and select the Avery’s Trace link. In the page that appears, mention the map, the Historical Background, and the Route section.

- Open the link for “AC: Tennessee, Naturalization Records, 1888-1992” and enter “Samin Victor” as the name. Then click View Record to see naturalization details.

GOAL 6: Military

Choice A:

“FS: Tennessee Military Records”

- In Online Resources briefly review each of the bullet points for online military records by time period. These record collections are good for learners to explore later.

- In Forts mention the list of military fort locations in Tennessee. Click the link for Fort Watauga and browse through the page.

- Briefly scroll through the sections for various wars that are listed. These may contain state-specific and general information about military records and conflicts.

- Open the 1840 Census of Pensioners, explain the headings, and scroll down the name list a bit.

- Scroll down the page and explain that the links point to collections from a number of different sites.

GOAL 7: Probate, Land, and Court

Choice A:

“FS: Tennessee Probate Records”

- In Online Resources briefly review each of the bullet points for probate records by time period and counties. These record collections are good for learners to explore later.

- In Record Synopsis summarize the paragraph to explain the types of information that may be found in probate records.

- In History briefly review the bullet list items for historical events that affected probate record keeping.

“FS: Tennessee Land and Property”

- In Online Resources briefly review each of the bullet points for land records by time period. These record collections are good for learners to explore later.

- In Tennessee Land Records summarize the first paragraph to describe the types of information that may be found in land records.

- Summarize the second paragraph to explain state-land (such as Tennessee) and how land was distributed.

- In the last two paragraphs, note the online resources for Tennessee land information.

Bureau of Land Management Site:

- Choose Tennessee in the search box and enter “Johnson” as the surname for the search. Then browse one of the land records.

- In Why Use Gazetteers summarize the first paragraph to describe the purpose of gazetteers.

- In Gazetteer Contents briefly review the bullet list items to show the types of information contained in gazetteers.

“Explore FamilySearch Places …”

- Click the link to see descriptions and map locations for places in the state. Zoom in to see additional pins, and scroll down the list a bit.

“Maps of US” site

- Scroll down to the Interactive Map section and click several of the year links to illustrate county formations in the state.

Choice B:

“ … David Rumsey Collection …” link

- In the Tennessee maps page, click the Appleton map for Kentucky and Tennessee. This shows towns and counties in the states for the year 1891. Zoom in (scroll wheel) to view more details. The left panel has filters you can use to refine your search.

- In Subcategories mention the links to see maps by centuries.

- Open any of the maps in the Media section and zoom in for details.

Goal 9: Newspapers - Choice A:

- In Online Resources briefly review each of the bullet points for newspapers. These record collections are good for learners to explore later.

- Briefly summarize the Introduction and Libraries and Archives sections, to highlight useful genealogy information in newspapers and to illustrate useful historical newspapers in the state.
