Google docs for speeches
This year for the first time our Y3-4 students wrote their speech directly into a google doc, which allowed the teacher and other students to give immediate and daily feedback as they were writing.
This made the editing and crafting of
their speech MUCH less of a chore!

Fridge magnets promoting class blog
As a way of promoting our class blog, each student in
our Y3-4 class create their own business card, which included their name, school, class, school
email address, class blog and the school
website. We then printed several copies for
each student, laminated them and stuck
magnetic tape on the back. The students
LOVED giving these away to family members!

Terrace End School eTools for Enhancing Writing
Terrace End School in Palmerston North have been working hard on their OTJs for writing as part of their combined BeL and Literacy development this year. Now they have begun compiling a resource linking their deep and surface features of writing (learning intentions) with specific eTools and strategies. Check out their work to date and add to it in this public version of their document.
Nah, we don’t useour iPads much...
“Oh, yeah, I forgot... We used iMovie to create our bullying video and Google Drive to work on the script together. That’s right - iMessage to transfer our video clips - unless we had an iPad 3, in which case Dropbox shared HD videos, and Keynote for the movie’s text… Then I guess we DID publicise it using Facebook and Twitter.”
Okay - I guess we DID use our iPads...

Analogue Twitter Wall
As a way to promote positive commenting as well as for those students who are shy, use a twitter wall and model positive commenting. The students will latch on to the idea. We use it to comment, share, post thoughts and to generate ideas.

Teacher Blended Learning PD
This week we celebrated what our amazing teachers have explored in their first year of Blended Learning. We went BYOD schoolwide at the beginning of the
year - thrown into it without any real planning, we were caught on the back foot but we have made great strides. Read more here - http://tinyurl.com/m938oek

Kidsedchatnz
My class joined Kidsedchatnz in May and we enjoyed it so much that we now run it!
Kidsedchatnz is an on-line twitter chat that takes part every Wednesday from 2-3pm.
I started with a group of 3 kids taking part and we now have 20 kids from my class involved and we have trained 5 other Russell Street School classes.
All info about Kidsedchatnz can be found here: http://kidsedchatnz.blogspot.co.nz

Hands-On Homework
Every week in our class I design a hands-on homework task for the kids to complete at home. Tasks are usually based around ICT and are designed to get the kids using their devices in a constructive way.
Some of the apps we have used are: Haiku Deck, Puppet Pals, Draw Something, Video Star, 4 Pics 1 Word, QR Code Reader, Go Animate, Aurasma, Minecraft, Phoster, CoLAR and Edmodo.
Some of the websites we have used are: Vacaroo, A-Map, StoryBird, Run My Route, Floor Planner, 10 Fastfingers, Build Your Wild Self, Poll Daddy, Quiz Revolution, Blogger and Prezi.
Some of the applications we have used are: Comic Life, I-Movie, Google Forms, Keynote and our Camera Skills.
You can check out all the hands-on homework tasks here:http://theinsandouts.co.nz/?cat=1

Snail & Whale Project
The Snail and Whale Project is where we send our class mascot The Snail and Whale to different classes around the world to host.
When the Snail and Whale are at their host classes we try and skype, blog and communicate with the different host classes.
So far our mascots the Snail and Whale have been to over 30 schools in 4 different continents.
The package we send includes the Snail and Whale, the snail and whale picture book and an information card explaining how to put a post on the snail and whale blog.
You can check out the Snail and Whale’s journey here:

Class Twitter Account
No more blogging! Instead of using my class blog to share our learning I started using our class twitter account instead!
Our class twitter account is already very active as we use it to take part in Kidsedchatnz and connect with other classes around the globe.
I think by using our class twitter account we can share more easily and more often. It also means that the kids can be responsible for the sharing as well.
Basically we will be sharing the same stuff (photos, videos, learning, etc…) but on a different platform.
You don’t need a twitter account to see what’s happening all you need to do is go to this address! https://twitter.com/palmykids

The Power of “SEND”
To help the children I work with really understand the power of “send” I have recently set up live blogs. Our camp blog posted live throughout the week. Last week we set up a live blog about “Planting for Penguins” and this term we have a literacy blog as a part of our rotation (a la Catriona Pene!) where the children post published items from mobile devices in the classroom. It has
turned out to be an incredibly
powerful learning experience about
clicking that “send” button.
Collaborative Blog
http://itsasmallworld2013.blogspot.co.nz
Through joining twitter I connected with 5 other teachers from around the world. We have a shared blog and google doc. We keep in touch mainly via twitter but also email and skype. The children blog on a shared topic each week although this has been tricky with different holidays etc across the 2 hemispheres and also with the time difference. The children have LOVED reading each others posts about daily life in schools, favourite food, activities at break time and lunch time etc etc. They have learnt to leave quality comments and reply to questions asked.
I got the idea from a local teacher who has been involved with another blog along the same lines.

We used AudioBoo to share and reflect on our speeches.
Then we learnt how to create a ‘Boo Board’ of our speeches to add to our blog. This was excellent for our families who couldn’t make the class and/ or school speech competition.
‘Teammr3, Speeches - 2013, Boo Board’
Now we are using AudioBoo to share our goals. Next steps are to add our reflections and create student ‘Boo Boards’
I love student voice!
Melanie Matthews
Broadlands School
Student voice is so powerful to me, as an educator. My students are encouraged to reflect and show us how they are learning frequently.
The ‘show us part’ is the hardest part for them but they are getting better and better at this.
Puppet Pals is often used by the students to reflect on their learning. Then they share it with their peers, family and school community via their blogs.

This is a new tool we have started using in our school and already we realise the great potential.
Our student inquiry is science based and embedded in this is the concept of cause and effect. Our big question is:
‘How can we help others understand the importance of the Ohaaki Wetlands?’
Already our students are beginning to use Book Creator to create books on their learning.
I will add links to the books as they are completed.
Here is a link to our Techie Brekkie Page
with helpful links.
Allanah King’s work has been a huge help to us.
Thanks Allanah!

Padlet
Padlet allows you to create your own ‘wall’. You can add text, links to You Tube videos or photos. It’s easy, is great for collaborative projects and easy to embed into your blog.
We use Padlet for weekly Adventure Learning reflections. Each group works on an iPad and
watches the magic appear on the IWB.
Here’s an example of one of our walls.

Adventure Learning
Adventure Learning is based on the concept of Google 20% Time. Students are given 20% of their week to learn about something they’re passionate about. It’s personalised learning at its best! For ideas about how to get started visit my Adventure Learning blog.

Goodbye Excel!!
When we were doing a statistics unit earlier this year I wanted the students to create a graph, but didn’t want to use Microsoft Excel with my year 4 children. I then came across Teaching Graphs. A fantastic app that is so simple to use. Graphs can then easily be uploaded to blogs. Make sure you check out the other Little Monkey apps too.

Wonderopolis
Wonderopolis is a website full of ‘wonders’. It covers everything from how jelly beans are made to how strong a crocodile’s jaw is. Each day there is a new wonder of the day. You can also ask your own I wonder questions. Check out the website by clicking here or follow them on Twitter @Wonderopolis. Fantastic for oral language, inquiry or personal inquiry projects like Adventure Learning.

Minecraft
This year I decided that it was about time I explored Minecraft as a learning platform, and after asking some 12 year olds and the guys at Dick Smith (!) talked to our techie about setting up an offline Minecraft server. Fortunately he thinks like a 12 year old (compliment) and got it going. We now have an offline multiplayer world for 60 players which is being used by teachers for literacy, maths, teaching values…

Minecraft Classroom Curriculum
We used Minecraft in our classroom to help visualize our novel study. We read the ‘City of Ember’ and P3 recreated the entire underground city in Minecraft. They each were assigned their own building to re-create. They used a Google Doc to plan out where they were each going to build and how much space they would have.
This helped with our classroom culture and really instilled our school values and digital citizenship.

QR CODES
Callie Ballara
Year 2
Samuel Marsden Collegiate
This year we have gone B.Y.O.D in my year 2 class.
I use QR codes all the time. There are many free QR code generators online, here is one I use: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ Students scan the codes with a scanning app on their iPads.
QR Codes
I love the idea of ‘flipping’ my classroom. One way I have successfully started to do this is by using TED.ED
On this website you can use YouTube clips to base a lesson around. You can add questions and links and then email to your students (I put a link on a QR code and glue it into their homework books so they can scan it with their iPads).
When you login, you can see who has completed the lesson and their answers!
Best of all it is easy to use and free!
One thing I have discovered is that it doesn’t work if you create it on an iPad, although once created it can be viewed and completed on an iPad.

Creative tools
I have tried to get the children to be creative using tools such as
http://www.makebeliefscomix.com
The children have loved being creative. and learning new It has engaged the children and made learning fun and exciting. It has also been great for our ELL learners as it provides a platform for them to plan their writing without having to use words.

Student/Teacher/Whanau feedback from using GAFE
Here is a link to the site I made about the perceived benefits and limitations of using a cloud computing solution like Google Apps for Education. Main findings show infrastructure must be in place, and the community links/support was the most important benefit.
Explain Everything
This app is a terrific all rounder. Teachers can use it as a modelling book, interactive whiteboard or to make screencasts.
Students use it to explain their learning, verbalise their problem solving, make slide presentations and more.
Imports and exports to your data storage such as Google Drive and Dropbox as well as to the camera roll to be used in other creative apps.
It’s a paid app, but excellent value for money

- Images on the site inspire the children to write and create books
- Allows children to craft their writing.
- This maybe done individually or collaboratively.
- My class choose to work on this
before school and
would keep going all day.
Google Presentation
We recently used a google presentation as a homework task to create a collection of excellent writing samples. We are looking to grow our vocab, encourage reading and build a class resource. Allocating a slide per student makes management easy. We use comments for feedback. Great Writing Samples

Prezi
I have taught my class of year 3 and 4’s how to use prezi. They all have their own accounts and have the app on
their page. They have used prezi to show what they have learnt through inquiry as well as making a presentation about our school. They have also been able to work collaboratively with others on a presentation

Tri-blogging Challenge
An adaptation on Quad Blogging - to build teacher connections and confidence across/within a school.
Background: Class blogs were launched in T3, 2013 as a means to promote digital citizenship, authentic audiences for students and celebration of learning with our community. Teachers were expected to post a minimum of 1 post per week.
Triblogging was launched to promote commenting and integration of blogging into daily teacher/class practice.

Making the world a better place
Kid President is an awesome kid from the USA who makes vlogs with his brother in law about how people can make the world a better place. I spent a week with my Year 8’s watching Kid President clips, discussing how they could make the world a better place and how they will achieve that. Our results can be found on the class pages of my website:

iMovie App - Trailers
Elizabeth Kazmierczak, Freeville School
For Storyboard help sheets click here.
In the classroom setting, I usually get children to create movies from scratch. The ‘Trailer’ option on the iMovie app is user friendly and introduces children to some of the basics of movie making.
So why use iMovie trailers in the classroom?
I think this comes down to your purpose and reason for using them. My class created their trailers at the beginning of the school year, so my purpose was to focus more on social skills. I wanted different pre-selected groups to work together, problem solve and work collaboratively to create their movie trailers.
If you’re a teacher who is not confident with using iMovie then this is a great starting point…
Nicecast
Nicecast is a simple piece of software for your mac that will allow your students to broadcast a live radio show over the internet. It works seamlessly with your itunes library.
You can set it to just the internal network or go live to the world. There’s a free trial to see how it works but the $70 is well worth it.

Green Screen Movie FX Studio Newscasts
Students in small groups watch a youtube clip related to the inquiry, wondering or a current events activity. They collaboratively
write a NEWSCAST script, rehearse and then perform. Teacher may need to scaffold the learning. There are a couple of apps but I still find the above app the most stable. Try to limit the newscast to 90 secs, less issues.

Movenote to flip the classroom
A fantastic google app that lets the children take control of the lesson. Have the child upload a presentation or doc and then they can film themselves talking over it. The doc/pres will scroll in ‘real time’. Great for student voice, peer tuition, hook in. One teacher used it for reading exemplars-endless possibilities …

Google Docs
Similar to the 2nd slide i used google docs for students to write their animal reports. The students were super motivated and loved getting the instant feedback.
One thing i am going to use more is the comment function. Students will need to act on the feedback and then click then reply to me stating they have.

This is a fantastic Reading tool- great for engaging some of the more reluctant readers and also motivating for those reluctant writers!
Students can read stories and listen to the ‘soundtrack’ created to go with the story, they can slow it down to match their reading rate- lots of texts to read and a range of levels, suits more senior primary and beyond.
Writing- students can create their own stories and then create their own ‘soundtracks’ to go with them.
I teach year 5&6, we have used as class novels,
literature circle texts, group readers, etc.
This term my class are going to write their own stories and publish for the world to enjoy-
Engaging and motivating to have a huge audience for their writing … I think yes!

Great to get started with Augmented reality in your classroom! I started with students making a video of themselves talking about their holidays, choosing a ‘trigger’ image and adding the overlay (video). These were then posted on our class window for other students to view.
