Training Module 2022-2023Scorer and Assistant Scorer/Libero TrackerReference: NYSCVOA Policy and Procedure Manual

The second referee (R2) works closely with the scorer and the assistant scorer (libero tracker)

throughout the match.

The R2 will review NYSCVOA’s scoring procedures with the scorer and the libero tracker

upon arrival.

This module is to help the scorer/libero tracker better understand what is expected during a match

The R2 will minimally review with the scorer and tracker the following information:

  • Entering the line up
  • Identify/record the correct server and the libero server
  • Record substitutions and identify not legal substitutions
  • Record number of time outs and team substitutions
  • Identify libero replacements
  • Set / match point

NYSCVOA Best Practice:

Officials should bring score sheets and

tracking sheets to every match just in case.…

2 of 18

Match paper work can be printed from the NYSCVOA website.

The scorer will need:

4 non-deciding set score sheets

1 deciding set score sheet

2 line up sheets

1 libero tracking sheet

The scorer should bring

3-4 different colored pens

(Black, blue, red) to every match

There are 2 libero system game sheets and one libero game sheets

3 of 18

The scorer will arrive at least 20 minutes prior to match time.

Upon arrival the scorer will:

  • Introduce yourself to the officials
  • Complete the header on the score sheet to include
    • Day and date
    • Level of match (Mod., JV., Vars.)
    • Time the match is scheduled to begin
    • Circle the first set

Important information is recorded in black (or the darker color) ink on the score sheet.

The scorer can fill in the teams’ sides, print your (scorer’s) name and sign the score sheet

4 of 18

Once the officials determine first serve, the first three score sheets can be filled out for the match. Complete the same areas like the first set and circle the S for first serve.

Currently it is unsure if the teams will change sides between sets, this procedure will be reviewed by the second referee (R2) court side with the scorer.

The Bulldogs (Team A left side of net/score sheet) chose to serve for set one.

Indicate sets 1, 2, 3 at the bottom of the completed score sheets.

All this information is recorded in black (or the darker color) ink.

5 of 18

Initial lineups and substitute’s numbers are recorded in the PLAYERS NUMBERS column.

The yellow highlighted part of the score sheet is known as the running score column.

The red outlined part of the score sheet is known as the scoring section. Important information is recorded in this section.

The SUBSTITUTIONS section is where team substitutions are counted.

The SANCTIONS and COMMENTS section is for penalties or sanctions issued to a team. The comments section is for rare events that require an explanation

6 of 18

The R2 (second referee) will obtain the lineups from both coaches and give them to the scorer. The scorer will secure the lineups and will make sure no one sees them. The circle indicates the first server for the set. Because the teams rotate forward (clockwise) on the court, the scorer enters the lineup, using the darker colored pen, backwards or counter clockwise from the first serve.

The c indicates

speaking / floor captain

Bull

War

The R2 and the scorer will check for duplicate numbers, lack of a libero number and no captain denoted on the lineup sheet. The scorer will check each player’s number when they go to serve the ball to guarantee proper service order is maintained throughout the set. The R2 will instruct the scorer on how he/she wants to be notified in the event of an incorrect server.

7 of 18

The scorer will draw a circle when Bulldogs #4 contacts the ball for service.

The scorer waits for the result of the play.

Bulldogs #4’s serve hits the net.

The R1 indicates a point for the Warriors and then signals net serve.

The R in the circle means rotate. The Bulldogs lost the point because the serve hit the net.

The Warriors first point is slashed (rally point) in the running score column and the corresponding number is recorded on the server’s line (#20) without a symbol around it.

Warriors #20 serves the ball. Draw a circle on #20’s line when the player contacts the ball. Then wait for the result of the play. The R1 indicates the Warriors won the point.

A number 2 gets recorded in the circle in the scoring section and a circle is drawn around the number 2 in the running score column

The R in the circle means that #20 served again but lost the point. TheR1 will award the point to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs will rotate and serve.

Bulldog #7 serves 3 times scoring the 2nd, 3rd and 4th points and the Warriors request a substitution #15 for # 20.

The R2 will whistle substitutions and verbalize numbers to the scorer.

The scorer does 2 things when the R2 authorizes a substitution for entry.

  • Enter the player in the PLAYERS NUMBERS column
  • Slash the (team) substitution number at the bottom of the scoring section
  • Please note the R2 may request you enter the substitution on the current server’s line using an S or an Sx

The Libero goes to serve for Bulldogs #10.

The first time the libero serves in the set. The scorer draws a triangle around the position (serving order column). The libero can’t serve in any other position.

The Warriors’ coach requests the first timeout in the set. Each team is allowed two.

The R2 will whistle and authorize timeouts.

The R1 and the R2 will indicate the side of the court and the scorer records the score on the corresponding side of the score sheet.

When recording the timeout, the requesting team’s (Warriors) score goes first.

The Bulldog’s libero serves and it results in a side out: R

The R1 awards a rally point to the Warriors and the Warriors rotate. (point 4 with no symbol)

The Bulldogs rotate to serve.

The 8th point is slashed (running score column) the corresponding number is recorded on the server’s line (no symbol)

The scorer notices Bulldogs #8 is preparing to serve. After #8 contacts the ball, the scorer notifies the R2 that #12 should be serving.

The R2 will assist the scorer in recording wrong server in the Sanctions box.

The R symbol is because #12 did not serve.

  • Enter the subs in the PLAYERS NUMBERS Column on the correct side.
  • Slash the next number in the SUBSTITUTIONS section on the correct side.

This completes the first round of service for the teams. At this point the scorer will change pen color. Often a red pen is used for the second round of service.

There is a rhythm to keeping score.

  • All slashed points in the running score column match rally points in the scoring section. A rally point begins each server’s line (except the first server of the set)
  • All non libero served points recorded in the scoring section match the circled points in the running score column.
  • All libero served points recorded in the scoring section match the triangle points in the running score column.
  • Each term of service ends with an R in a symbol

The Assistant Scorer / Libero Tracker (AS/LT)

The AS/LT will help the scorer keep track of substitutions (team and players) as well as when the libero serves.

Once the libero has served in a position, the libero must serve from that position for the remainder of the match.

When the libero enters the court the AS/LT will record an L next to the number the libero is replacing. The libero replacement does not count as a substitution.

When a substitution is authorized by the R2 to enter the court, the AS/LT will slash the number of the player leaving the court and record the player’s number entering the court. The team substitution is slashed.
