Meditation in the Museum

The Problem

Many experiences focus on the present.

Don’t focus on the before/what mentality people walk in with.

Can heavily impact a user’s reaction to the experience.

Unfair to curators as it’s mainly out of their control.

Concept

Educate

introduce different concept of meditation to audience + how different practices could be used throughout daily life.

Present

Present problems and solutions to curators and designers for each floor based on user mental state before the experience.

Research

Research each floor and think about different “installations” that can go on each floor to prep users before entering exhibitions on the floor.

Use

Use the Exchange as a fundamental space for meditating/break time when there aren’t events.

Create

Create a demo of meditative practices for different situations in final project presentation.

Institutional/Scholarly Need

  • MIT Museum- there is a lot going on with all the displays. A lot to show, and can be difficult for visitors to transition properly between them all. Help facilitate that transition by floor.
  • The Exchange- doesn’t seem to be used regularly. Could be used as a group meditative place / to emphasize resting to others when they walk by if there are actually people using it.
  • Photography Lab- introduce eastern views stated in the exhibit and allow them to try out the exercises people in the lab did back then for a more interactive experience.

Field Overview

  • Zen gardens – place back then for monks to meditate, but nowadays some are open for people to view similar to museums.
  • Bringing meditation into the classroom.
  • Meditation and usages in mental health.

Enabling Technologies

MIT Museum- the Exchange.

Potentially VR/AR if space limitations.

For interaction- use digital technologies.

Might be fun to get some live physiological measurements to see live effects.
