What I Need to Know

This module was created to deliver science concepts in an integrative way. It is to help you analyze or solve problems critically, think innovatively, and make sound decisions. It is important for you to understand the basic scientific approach in dealing with the daily life situations and find answers to different events and phenomena that may occur naturally or due to human activities.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

    • Lesson 1 – Scientific Method: Components of Scientific Investigation
    • Lesson 2 – Qualitative and Quantitative Observations

After going through this module, you are expected to describe the components of a Scientific Investigation (S7MT-Ia-b-1).

MODULE TITLE: SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION

SUBJECT: SCIENCE 7 QUARTER: 1 MODULE: 1

24 of 144

Specifically, you are expected to:

    • recognize that the design of an investigation should show fair testing;
    • identify the components of an investigation;
    • describe constant, independent and dependent variables;
    • classify observations as to qualitative or quantitative; and
    • differentiate observation from inference.

LESSON 1: Scientific Method: Components of Scientific Investigation

27 of 144

Science and technology affect human beings and their way of life. Scientists and inventors make discoveries and innovations to make life comfortable and make our works easier and faster. They perform experiments to work out solutions to problems. They follow steps in order to achieve a sound solution to a problem. This progression of steps is known as the scientific method.

MODULE TITLE: SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION

SUBJECT: SCIENCE 7 QUARTER: 1 MODULE: 1

32 of 144

What is it?

Scientific method is a logical process of finding solution to a problem. It involves a series of steps that are used to solve problems: identifying the problem; gathering data; formulating hypothesis; testing the hypothesis; formulating conclusion; and verifying the conclusion. The factors that are being tested in an experiment are called variables.

What is it?

Variables are components in an experiment that are either maintained or changed to check the validity of the results. Independent variable is the condition that is varied or manipulated. Dependent variable is the condition that results from manipulation or affected by the independent variable. The condition that is controlled or kept the same in the experiment is called the constant variable.

Janna’s Experiment

Janna noticed that there are crushed eggshells in the pots of orchids in her neighbor’s garden. She wondered why eggshells are placed in the pots. She observed the orchid leaves in the garden and she saw that the leaves are dark green in color. She wants to find out if the eggshells affect the growth of the orchids in the garden.

Procedure:

Janna’s Experiment

Janna guessed that orchids with eggshells will have greener leaves than those without eggshells because as the eggshells decompose, minerals in the shells and in the membrane will provide nutrients to the growing orchids. Greener leaves mean the orchids are healthy.

Procedure:

1. Read the experiment below.

Janna’s Experiment

Janna asked her father to help her prepare a greenhouse to conduct an experiment. They purchased 10 pots of orchids of the same variety, size and age. She arranged the 5 pots in the left corner of the greenhouse and another 5 pots in the right corner. Then, she made an initial record of the appearance of the orchids in her notebook. Together with her father, they collected some eggshells, crushed them, and distributed them equally among the 5 pots in the right corner. All the orchids were taken care of in the same way for 45 days.

Janna’s Experiment

In the first and second week of observations, there were no manifestations of changes in the orchids but the succeeding observations started to show changes in the color of the orchid’s leaves. After 45 days, Janna noticed that the leaves of the orchids with eggshells were darker green in color than those without eggshells.

Janna discovered that eggshells can be used as fertilizers for some varieties of orchids as shown by the greener color of their leaves.

What is it?

There are two ways on how you can do your observations when conducting scientific investigation. It could be qualitative observation or quantitative observation. Identifying the color, smell, shape, and texture are qualitative observations. These observations focus on the quality of the object. Counting items like number of shoes sold per day, number of likes or hearts collected in your social media post, and number of steps you took while walking from house to school are all examples of quantitative observations.
