Science

  • Search for explanations
  • How does this affect that?
  • Independent, dependent variables

Engineering

  • Search for solutions to problems
  • Meet criteria
  • Work within constraints
  • Iterations-cost and efficiency

Criteria

  • Assembled drill rig must be able to be pulled across a table to retrieve an ice core.
  • Tall enough to lift a 15 cm ice core sample tube above the surface of the table.
  • Incorporate a pulley system (carabiner/string) to lift the ice core using a sideways or downward pull on the cable.

Constraints

  • Use only materials provided
  • Rig cannot be touched during ice core retrieval. (You can touch the string)

Classroom Testing Model:

  • Two tables with a small (~8-cm) gap represent the ice sheet
  • Metal pipe on the floor represents the ice core barrel
  • Drill rig needs to be pulled into retrieval position
  • Pulley needs to be used to retrieve ice core

  • Group Goal: 100% of group build an identical structure
  • One Engineer (Chloe) has designed a structure and prepared assembly instructions. (No other communication)
  • Group: Group CAN NOT talk to each other but can see each other.
  • One person (Lee Ann) is allowed to raise her “thumbs up” when she believes everyone has successfully built an identical structure.
