What is a ‘ tense’

  • A tense is a term that indicate the time of the action.
  • Verb is the action showing word in a sentence.
  • Therefore tense is basically attached with verbs.

Simple past/ past indefinite:��Let’s see some examples�1. I bought a new camera yesterday.�2. We helped our friends.��The two sentences have verbs that show actions in the past. But no definite time in the past is indicated. So the verbs are in simple past or past indefinite tense.

Formation of Simple past.�(This tense is formed with V2 form of the verb)���Affirmative/ positive sentence:�Subject+ verb 2 +object�

1. For a past action with past time adverb

Ex. I saw Janki long ago.

Madhvi wrote me a letter yesterday.

2. Past discontinued habit.

Ex. He visited temple frequently.(no habit of visiting temple now)

She usually sang song in the evening. (no singing now)
