Objective:

In Reading, students engage in inquiry and research. With adult assistance, students generate questions for inquiry as they develop and follow a research plan. Through this process, students demonstrate an understanding of information as they answer their pre-generated questions of inquiry. Additionally, students continue to incorporate ongoing reading strategies when necessary in order to improve comprehension.

In Writing, students use the writing process to deliver their research findings. Students organize the information they have gathered and determine the best way to deliver their findings to a suitable audience. Students revise their writing by adding details in pictures or words to clarify their message. Students edit their writing for complete sentences, appropriate use of pronouns, and correct spelling as well as previously taught conventions. Students publish and present their finding to an audience.

In Word Study, students increase their decoding and spelling skills as they learn additional vowel team and diphthong patterns. They continue to add high frequency words to their ever increasing sight word vocabularies as they become more accurate, fluent readers. Additionally, students are introduced to alphabetizing to the second letter.

• This unit plan is modified to include the learning that students could accomplish independently.

Objective:

Students extend their knowledge of geometric figures to include three-dimensional figures, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), triangular prisms, rectangular (square) pyramids, and triangular pyramids. Students distinguish between attributes that define three-dimensional figures (edges, faces, and vertices) and attributes that do not define three-dimensional figures (size, color, texture, orientation, etc.).

Students explore the continuous nature of linear measure by using concrete, non-standard measuring tools to measure the length of objects. Students determine the length of an object as the number of same-size units of length that, when laid end-to-end with no gaps or overlaps, reach from one end of the object to the other.

​

Students will refine their understanding of addition and subtraction. Students will generate and solve addition and subtraction problems within 20 using a variety of objects, pictorial models, and strategies. Students will apply basic fact strategies and properties of operations to add and subtract two or three numbers, including determining the unknown when the unknown may be any one of three or four terms in the equation.

​

Students focus on defining money earned as income and identify income as a means of obtaining goods and services. Students distinguish between goods and services and between wants and needs as they explore the need to often make choices between spending income on wants versus needs.

To begin, create three columns labeled: Item, Prediction, and Result. Write down the item name in the appropriate column. You should also draw a picture of the item for children who aren’t quite old enough to read. Go through each item and ask for a prediction before performing the measurement. When it finally comes time to measure, stack the lego blocks until you reach the height of the object. Write the result, and you’re done!

How to play/Como jugar:

Players take turns drawing a stick from the can. Players can either read the word on the stick, or quickly look at the word, cover it up, and then spell it without looking. If the player answers correctly, she keeps the stick. If the player answers incorrectly, the stick is returned to the can.

If the player draws a BAM! stick, she must return all her sticks to the can.

Play continues until the parent calls time. Alternatively, a time limit can be set and the winner is the person with the most sticks in their possession when time is up.
