Main Idea

  • Remember that main idea is what a selection is mostly about
  • To identify the main idea:
    • Read the question first and underline the key words. Key words for main idea questions are mostly about, mainly about, mainly describes, main idea, and best title. Read the answer choices. Try to keep these choices in mind as you read the selection.
    • Read the selection. After reading, ask yourself "What is this selection about?" Form your own main idea statement.
    • Reread the question and answer choices. Look for an answer

Writing Long Answers

There are two kinds of long answer questions:

1. One long answer question will ask you to put ideas together from one or two selections and use your own words to write about them. You will need to use you need to use your reasoning power to make decisions about what you have read.

2. The second kind of long answer question will ask you to use your reasoning powers. But this kind of question will ask you to express your own thoughts and feelings.

* give your opinion- what you think or feel about a story or topic.

* give your judgement- what you decide about an author's purpose or way of writing.

* Connect ideas and experiences from the selection to your own life. For example, you might be asked to put yourself in a character's place and tell what you would do in the same situation. You might be asked to think of a real-life person who is like a character in a story. You might be asked how you might use the information you read about in your own life.

Writing Long Answers

  • Be organized- topic sentences that restate, answer the question and state why. Always use key words from the question in your topic sentence. If you are asked your opinion, use words like "I think..., I feel..., In my opinion..."
  • Use clear details- use supporting details from the story and explain how they connect to your topic sentence
  • Stick to the topic
  • Use descriptive language
  • Use connecting words:
    • Time words: first, next, later
    • Cause effect words: because, since, as a result
    • Compare contrast words: like, also, unlike, however
  • Choose words carefully: write your thoughts and feelings clearly and make them interesting.
  • PROOFREAD!
