New Program This Year!

Category 1

Category 1 Hurricane program is designed for children who are comfortable with the water and are ready to learn the basics of swimming. Swimmers will predominately be 4-6 years old, but other ages but older can be okay too :)

Program goals

  • Introduce a team environment: Swimmers learn to participate in a structured, group setting and build camaraderie with teammates.
  • Build endurance and stamina: Swimmers progress a safe beginner with potential to join swim team in current season or seasons thereafter.
  • Refine stroke technique: Coaches are IN WATER at all practices to provide personalized one on one attention with a group lesson feel. Developing basic swimming techniques on freestyle and backstroke
  • Teach competitive skills: Swimmers learn about competitive strokes such as freestyle and backstroke, turns, starts, streamlines and finishes.
  • Provide low-pressure competition: Swimmers will be invited to join one or two of our Tuesday night Star meets to showcase their skills. Coaches will be available to swim with them “in water”.

Dual Meets are intra-club meets against RMSL teams

  • At the beginning of the season, coaches will ask for your meet availability so they can plan. Please communicate ASAP any changes in attendance status. Last minute cancellations can impact events like relays.
        • All meets and swim team events are optional. Though many families choose to attend as many meets and events as they can, we want the season to be accessible to all. We understand it is summer and there are plenty of other things going on!
        • The only required attendance is if your child wishes to swim in prelims/finals. Those requirements are: Swimmers must attend 2 dual meets to be eligible to swim at Prelims

Swimtopia is our main way to communicate with parents

On the Swimtopia site

  • Access calendar of events, volunteer sign up sheets, event ticket purchases
  • Read the Parent Handbook! It likely has the answers to your questions and includes important safety information.

  • Swimtopia is the primary tool for team wide announcements, including weather cancellations and schedule changes. Note: Weather cancellations are called by 2:30 pm for afternoon practices and by 7:15 am for morning practices
  • Emails are sent via Swimtopia from coaches, parent reps, volunteer coordinators. As season progresses, your child’s coach will send weekly emails with updates and upcoming meet information. Ensure your contact information is accurate!

Download the Swimtopia app

  • See live progression of meet, meet results, swimmer times, and volunteer sign ups
  • Children with phones can login as guests (no credentials needed)
  • Be sure to enable push notifications. This allows us to communicate with the entire team via this method. This will likely be used for delays and weather cancellations.

Swimmer Conduct and Behavior

  • The safety of all swimmers is a top priority, disruptive behavior will not be tolerated
  • Swimmers will be asked to leave practice and the pool area if their behavior requires repeated attention from coaching staff. Parents will be called and required to have a conversation with the coach before the swimmer can return to practice. In addition, a parents will be required to accompany the swimmer to the next scheduled practice.
  • Any swimmer asked to leave practice more than once during the week may not be allowed to swim in the next dual meet.
  • During practices, coaches are NOT able to watch over individual swimmers when they are not in the pool. If your child needs help using the restroom, getting home safely, or is not independent in any way, please ensure they have a trusted adult available during practice and meets to assist them. This is especially important for the younger age groups.
