Create and implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, the California Association of School Counselors (CASC) guidelines and standards, Social Justice standards, Restorative Practices, MTSS/MTMDSS, CASEL, and best practices.

School Counseling Program Focus

The school counseling program is accessible to ALL students and is centered on encouraging student growth in academic, personal and social/emotional domains.

To address this, the school counselor provides services in all 3 tiers of support.

School counselors are encouraged to spend 80% of their time in direct and indirect services and 20 % of their time on program management and school support

Monthly counseling lessons and parent education workshops based on school needs and data.

Group and individual counseling.

Crisis Intervention.

Crisis Intervention

Crisis behaviors include: Explosive behavior, threats of aggression to self or others, severe excessive crying/behavior, etc.

Individual Counseling

6-8 weeks short term counseling focused on skill building in the areas of anxiety, anger management, transitions, social skills, etc.

Small Groups

6-8 weeks short term group counseling focused on skill building in areas of social skills, impulse control, anger management, etc.

How are students referred to counseling?

  • On-site Family Therapist
  • Parents Needs assessment: a survey given to parents to complete twice a year
  • Counselor referrals based on observations and students’ needs

  • Classroom lessons: August/September
    • First lesson is Meet the School Counselor and Zone of Regulation (Emotional Regulation)
    • Lessons start on August 29th.
    • Plan for monthly counseling lessons:
      • Week 1: TK, K and 1st grade
      • Week 2: 2nd and 3rd grade
      • Week 3: 4th and 5th grade
      • Week 4: make-up lessons (if needed)

  • Individual Counseling Sessions:
    • Follow ups: First 2 weeks of school
    • New referrals deadline September 9
    • However, sometimes it will be case by case

  • Group Counseling:
    • September 19- Parent consent is needed!
