JMM actions in the field of higher education

Objectives (E+ Guide 2022, pg. 350):

  • promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of EU studies worldwide;
  • foster dialogue between the academic world and society, including local and state level policy-makers, civil servants, civil society actors, representatives of the different levels of education and of the media;
  • generate knowledge and insights in support of EU policy-making and strengthen the role of the EU within Europe and in a globalised world;
  • reach out to a wider public and spread knowledge about the EU to the wider society (beyond academia and specialised audiences) bringing the EU closer to the public.

Jean Monnet “Teaching and Research”

  • Modules:
  • short teaching programmes/courses; short specialised or summer programmes;
  • minimum duration - 40 teaching hours/academic year, duration - 3 yrs;
  • Focus - one particular discipline in European studies; multidisciplinary
  • Chairs:
  • teaching posts, specialisation in European Union studies;
  • a duration of 3 yrs;
  • held by only one professor, minimum of 90 teaching hours/academic year;
  • may also have a team, additional teaching hours.
  • Centres of Excellence:
  • focal points of competence and knowledge on EU subjects;
  • high-level experts;
  • synergies between the various disciplines and resources in EU studies;
  • joint transnational activities, openness to civil society;
  • reach out: students not normally dealing with EU issues, policy makers, civil servants, organised civil society and the general public at large.

Jean Monnet policy debate

  • Large thematic networks in HE;
  • 1 network/EU priority (1 on internal EU issues “Future of Europe”; 1 on foreign policy issues “Europe in the world”);
  • Aim:
  • collect, share and discuss among the partners (research findings, content of courses and experiences, other products (studies, articles, etc.));
  • provide regular feedback on the most advanced and innovative practices in the field, supporting and adding value to the debate.
  • One network – one tool for sharing posted docs;
  • Coordinator select innovative/interesting results for the Commission
  • JMN in other fields of education and training - networks of schools and VET institutions;
  • Aim - exchange good practices, share experiences (content, methodologies; knowledge in teaching European issues);

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN AND FOR EUROPEAN CONTEXTS – FoLATE, Jean Monnet Module�-620593-EPP-1-2020-1-AL-EPPJMO-MODULE-

Aims and objectives:

  • Training of future foreign language teachers (students in MA programmes in English and Italian) - knowledge of the EU, its institutions, culture and policies, especially those related to:
  • language,
  • intercultural communication,
  • language policies,
  • CEFR.
  • introduce students to European concepts regarding foreign language teaching and learning - the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR) and the European Language Portfolio (ELP);
  • improve understanding of intercultural education, multilingualism, plurilingualism, language competence and so on;
  • raise the awareness of students, future teachers to live, work and interact in a European environment;
  • to extend the curriculum in the field of European Policies / Studies;
  • improve the professional skills of module participants.

FoLaTE -

  • Integrated modules;
  • one six-credit course;
  • three main teaching activities;
  • offered during the spring semester to second-year MA students as part of their regular curriculum;
  • offered in two languages, English and Italian, corresponding to the two MA programmes at our department (6 teaching activities altogether);
  • teaching activities – seminars

FoLaTE - The content of the modules in brief

  • FLT in and for European contexts (60 classes), 6 credits;
  • to be delivered in English and Italian;
  • made up of the following modules upon whose completion students will earn 6 credits which will weigh towards the overall credits to meet the requirements for the completion of their MA programme:
  • European language education policies and teacher education (16 hours), 1.5 credits
  • Language Competence: European Framework, Reference and Indicator (20 hours), 2 credits
  • 21st-century perspectives of FLT in multilingual Europe (24 hours), 2.5 credits

FoLaTE - participants

  • Students, MA programmes in ELT and ILT;
  • Modules, open to:
  • in-service teachers,
  • former students of our department,
  • others who can take them (either in English or Italian) as part of the qualifications needed for their professional development as laid down in article 58 in the Albanian pre-university education law;
  • Seats, available to in-service teachers to join one of the courses, either in English or in Italian,
  • certificate of participation awarded at the end of the module as credit to the Jean Monnet Module.

Other activities and deliverables in brief

  • 3 conferences, in Vlora every year; proposed topics in the realm of European policies on languages, teacher education and the like; to be held in autumn as follow-up and disseminating activities; special sessions with students’ presentations;
  • selection of papers for publication in the conference volumes; 3 conference volumes;
  • A coursebook (available in two versions, in English and Italian) on FLT in and for European contexts;
  • A teaching resource pack, available online on the project’s website;
  • An interactive project’s website, constantly updated with information about the project, its activities, and the resources produced;
  • Project presentations in the media, in other conferences and activities;
  • Publication of article(s) in peer-reviewed journals by members of the teaching team.
