The Nellie McClung Program is one of three programs at

École Wîhkwêntôwin School. We are a K-9 Learning Community with a regular program,

a French Immersion program and the Nellie McClung

all girls junior high program.

At École Wîhkwêntôwin School we take care of each other in our welcoming, inclusive environment.

Together we are collaborative, purposeful

and engaged life-long learners.

We choose kindness.

We acknowledge with respect and gratitude that we are on Treaty 6 territory. This is a traditional meeting ground, gathering place, and travelling route to the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. We acknowledge all the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.

Teaching and Learning

  • We teach the Alberta Core Curriculum as well as leadership opportunities, options and athletic opportunities through the lens of women’s empowerment and leadership.

  • This is where girls take center stage, which is just where they belong.

  • Girls need to know, really know deep down, that there is nothing that can stand in their way. The Nellie McClung program sends that message every day.

Uniform

The Nellie uniform is a commitment of harmony and respect. It is worn with pride by our students.

It is worn during the school day and at functions as instructed by school staff. Uniforms alleviate peer pressure and competition, and decrease time in the morning spent choosing what to wear.

What Nellies say about the Uniform

  • The uniform means you see your friends, not what they're wearing.
  • Everyone can see that I go to Nellie McClung. I like that.
  • I am never judged or teased for what I am wearing.
  • Although we all have uniforms we are still able to express ourselves in different and creative ways. i.e hair, makeup, jewelry.
  • There are a surprising number of choices within the uniform. It is fun to see how many combinations I can come up with.
  • The uniform is an integral part of our program which focuses on the leadership, teamwork, and community. The uniform connects us through our outward appearances and our values as Nellies, making us part of a special community.
  • Nellies know how to dress well and we take pride in our appearance.

Teaching Philosophy

We believe in creating cross-curricular connections for students that help them develop transferable skills and actively engage in their learning in multiple ways.

For 2025/2026, our technology agreement has been updated to include a clause that states ‘no phones during school hours’, including on-campus lunch.

Humanities

Humanities is when we interconnect the learning that happens in Language Arts and Social Studies Classes.

“The Humanities strengthen our global view, broaden our intellectual foundation, teach us to communicate clearly, help us to develop creative and critical thinking skills, teach us to be problem solvers, create engaged citizens and thinkers.”

The Nellie McClung Math program aims to ensure that students are able to use Mathematics confidently to solve problems, reason and communicate mathematically. Students are able to make connections between Mathematics and its applications. We use the Alberta Curriculum to engage a holistic blend of learning activities and projects.

Science

Our science program believes in a hands on approach for student learning. This creates an environment that fosters critical thinking as students are able to learn through real experiences. Using the Alberta Program of Studies we are able to explore a range of topics from human systems, to chemistry, to space and beyond!

Physical Education and Wellness

One thing I would tell a potential student about the program is that it is a much more positive space compared to some other schools. Especially if you’re someone who doesn’t feel like you belong. For me, Gym class was always something I hated. It never made me feel good about myself, and it was more about being the best athlete, rather than improving, or having a good attitude. However at Nellie, It’s much more positive. Gym isn’t about who was the best, but rather about having fun, and developing a good attitude towards exercise. Now I walk out of Gym class laughing and enjoying myself, rather than the humiliation I felt at other schools. I’ve felt so much more included at Nellie, and I finally feel like I belong. Nellie is a great place for girls who have trouble making friends, or girls who just want to belong to a tight knit group of friends, because that's what Nellie feels like to me. Elise Gr. 9

French Class

Our French program follows the French as a Second Language program of studies. We have a diverse group of students, from those who attended French immersion throughout elementary school to newcomers who are just beginning to learn French. Through collaborative activities and opportunities for leadership, students at all levels of French can make progress in their knowledge and skills. Along with language activities, we explore French culture in Canada and abroad, from holidays to music to food. We are lucky to have a French Immersion program at École Wîhkwêntôwin School and love the opportunity to interact with these young learners of French.
