GOAL E2: Revolutionary War Records

Choice A:

“FS: Revolutionary War”

- Read or summarize the first paragraph for an introduction to the Revolutionary War.

- In Original British Colonies and State Revolutionary War Records, explain that these links go to pages with Revolutionary War records for the corresponding states.

- Pause at the Online Records section and explain that these are good record collections to check online.

“AAC: Finding a Patriot”

- Watch the entire video. Timings 1:38 and 2:27 show key elements of research strategies.

“TH: Researching Your …”

- In Did My Ancestor Serve … summarize the first paragraph to highlight age restrictions, and who may have served and how.

- Scroll down to Is This Really My Ancestor and briefly discuss the importance of making sure your ancestor is not confused with someone with a similar name.

- In Revolutionary War Service Records, summarize the first paragraph and discuss the different types of records available for research.

- Scroll down to Loyalists … and briefly mention those who would not have served with the patriots of the Revolutionary War. Also included would be Quakers, ministers, and German mercenaries (Hessians).

“RT: Why Should I Look at …”

- Summarize the first two paragraphs for background info about pension records and multiple applications, and the genealogy clues they provide.

- In Why Pension Files briefly read and discuss the bullet points for types of information commonly found in pension files.

“AAC: Bounty Land”

- Watch the entire video, commenting on key points as desired.

“Daughters of the American Revolution”

- Open the link for the site and select the “Revolutionary War Pension Index” link.

- In the search fields type “Taylor” as the surname and “Abraham” as the first name.

- In the first result, click the “soldier-glass” icon to display DAR information for this person. Scroll down to show info for family members. Also mention the red button on the right side that displays all known descendants of the selected person.

“Military Indexes site”

- Open the link and mention that the links on the page are from a variety of Revolutionary War sources.

- Scroll down to the Pennsylvania links and select “Pennsylvania Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File …”

- In the search field enter “York” (for York county, Pennsylvania).

- In the results, click the upper-right record image to show pay for transport of British prisoners.

“Record Search Practice”

- Click the link for the first exercise and briefly review the info. This is an example of an exercise that can be done during or after the class. Then click the Hints link to show help info. Explain that the Answers link has the answers to the items in the problem statement, but don’t open the Answers link.

“QUIKLinks”

- Briefly scan the list of QUIKLinks and demonstrate one of them, to show how easy it is to access a record collection from a QUIKLink.
