  • You will be given three minutes to come up with as many non-intended uses to this object: a brick
  • Do this as an individual and write it on the blank piece of paper that is handed out to you.

Civ Game: The Project

  • You will be creating your own civilizations within groups, determining what is important to your surviving and thriving.
  • Here in humanities you will be learning about the foundations of societies: the similarities and differences, historical and current

Before we had societies…

  • There were a variety of human species, for example: Homo Erectus, who lived between 1.89 million and 110,000 years ago.
  • Homo Sapiens (Wise Man) were hunter-gatherers; using group numbers and tools to capture their food.
    • Have lived from about 300,000 years ago until…today.

What is a civilization?

  • Historically, civilization and civilized society were ethnocentric and used to distinguish “savages” from “civilized people”

  • A civilization is, in a general sense: “The process by which a society or place reaches an advanced stage of social and cultural development and organization.”

Group Mapping

  • In table groups you will be looking over the map provided on Google Classroom
  • Alongside the map, you and your group will write what geographical aspects you notice (mountains, etc.)
  • Reflect on what you believe was necessary for an early society to flourish here? What makes you think that?

The Fertile Crescent

  • The Fertile Crescent is one of the first locations where humans settled into farming and domesticated crops.
  • It is known for being incredibly fertile (hence the name) and a great place for agriculture.

Hopes and Dreams

Write EITHER:

  1. An official speech or address, written from the perspective of “leadership” to the citizens, or
  2. A personal journal or letter. While less formal in nature, should still have a serious tone

  • You should work to incorporate the 3 mandatory elements of motivational speeches (TRUST, DESIRE, CLARITY/Call to ACTION)
  • Provide insight on the flaws of the past civilization or highlight what you are trying to avoid.
  • Your writing should touch on emotions associated with leaving earth behind and charting the unknown
  • Your writing should be inspirational, communicate your hopes and dreams for your civilization in your new home
