The service provides a range of community benefits for the target community, both on-air and off-air, and in doing so, achieves the following objectives:

• Facilitation of discussion and the expression of opinion

• Education for the better understanding of the particular community and the strengthening of links within it.

The main types of music broadcast over the course of each week are: Hits, pop, rock, easy listening, oldies, reggae, Ska, techno, drum ’n’ bass, urban, country and western, folk, world music, blues, jazz, classical and locally created songs and performance.

The main types of speech output broadcast over the course of each week are: news and weather, local news, live debates and phone-ins, interviews, local events information, comedy, and oral history.

Radio Caroline is for people aged 45 plus who wish to hear album tracks from the 1960s onwards. The station involves volunteers in programme-making and in running the service. Training is offered to members of the target community and to younger listeners, including in the station’s ship-based studios. It has a Radio Caroline Support Group which is represented on the board.
