CHAMPS and Reflections

36

Thursday

Let me tell you a story…

Once upon a time, the De Anza teachers and staff decided to get rid of detention. Have you noticed that we are the only school that doesn’t “do” detention?

Everyone wanted to know - how could we create a system to address misbehaviors where the students could be in charge of fixing the problem? How could we do this and still be able to teach in the classroom?

CHAMPS and Reflections

Thursday

The Reflection and Buddy System was born!

Here are the main ideas:

  • YOU the student are responsible for your behavior. If there is an issue, it’s up to you to solve it. That’s why you get a reflection (not a punishment).

CHAMPS and Reflections

Thursday

The Reflection and Buddy System was born! Here are the main ideas:

2. If you can’t solve the problem on your own, it’s time for a second-step reflection and break from the classroom. At this level it’s time to get help from your parents/guardians.

3. After yellow and pink reflections (or if you refuse to participate in reflections) you get a referral to the office. At this level you may be referred to whichever special help or services you need or you could be suspended from class, or suspended from school.

Yellow reflections are your opportunity to correct the issue. Be honest and straightforward. You can use this reflection to communicate with your teacher what you need.

Instructions for use:

*** Major infractions are referred directly to administration ***

  • Write your full name, date, and teacher
  • Write the classroom activity
  • The teacher circles which letter(s) of CHAMPS that need reflection

4. Copy the expectation given by your teacher.

5. Do your best to answer the questions honestly and with complete sentences.

6. Turn in the form to your teacher and make a plan.

SUCCESS = Using the reflection to learn and improve

If the behavior continues, your teacher may give you a pink reflection. If you get this, that means your parents are contacted and it is recorded in Q. Take this reflection very seriously and try to get help to improve.

It’s all up to you.

We are here to support your learning journey.
