• A great way to get practice at presenting at a conference

• Alternative to paper presentation
• Hands on sharing of ideas
• Opportunity to showcase your lesson ideas that you did with your students that you wish to share with others
• Includes actual teaching resources worksheets, games, etc.

WHAT DOES A SESSION LOOK LIKE?

FONT TYPE AND SIZE

No more than 2 different fonts, for example:

• Title (Calibri)
• 40-82 font
• Large enough to be seen from 5-6 ft (1.5-2 meters) away
• Teacher Names (Calibri)
• Large enough to be seen 2ft away
• Content Headings (Calibri)
• 32-40 font
• Content Text (Times New Roman)
• As large as possible

• Know the research behind your presentation and reference it in your presentation.

• Participants will want to discuss your ideas /research so be prepared to answer questions.

DIVIDE YOUR CONTENT INTO CATEGORIES

PICTURES/PHOTOS/TABLES/CHARTS

• School Photos
• Tables or Charts that explain your information or data
• Images that have a Creative Commons License
• Use “stock photos” as search term in Google/Safari
• Photos/Pictures must enhance your content
• You need to cite (reference) the photos
• Everything needs to be visible from distance
• Make sure that all headings are the same size font
• Make sure everything is aligned; the poster visually pleasing

OTHER PRESENTATION TIPS

SET UP

• Check out the space when you arrive at the conference
• Look for your assigned space
• Find out when you can set up your poster
• Have everything ready before the opening time
• Poster
• Handouts
• Demonstrations (games)
• Make sure you have a bottle of water ready
• Take a Deep Breath – It will be fun!!

YOUR ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES AS A PRESENTER

• Divide up sections so everyone has a chance to speak, if presenting with others

• Construct a list of questions you think participants will ask

​

• Rehearse answers to your questions

​

• Practice – Invite colleagues at your school to a mock poster presentation

​

• Add any new questions to your list.

PRESENTATION TIPS

1. Talk ABOUT your poster /showcase. DO NOT read it. Use it as a visual tool to engage the participant(s).
2. Have a 2-3 minute talk ready.
3. Put only the most important information on the poster.
4. If there is more information, include a handout.
5. Questions you don’t expect:
• “That’s a good question” and answer truthfully.
• Saying ”I don’t know” is OK.
• Use this as an opportunity to think about things you might want to learn in the future.
6. This is an informal presentation, but it is NOT a good time to chat with friends about non-poster related topics.
