Overview of the � Male Reproductive System

  • Being familiar with the male anatomy, will help you better understand your body as you grow

  • During puberty, a hormone called testosterone enables the testicles to start producing mature sperm for the first time

  • The purpose of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm

The 5 Tanner Stages of Development

Assesses stages of puberty by looking at signs of male maturation:

  • genital/pubic hair growth
  • growth spurts
  • muscle development
  • growth of body/facial hair
  • voice deepening
  • Progression through stages varies from person to person- everyone has their own timetable
  • Boys maturation is usually 1-2 years later than girls

Stage One Physical Changes

  • This stage starts at birth and ends somewhere between the ages 10 – 13
  • Childhood stage; no visible signs of pubertal development

Stage Two Physical Changes

  • Usually happens between ages

9 –14

  • Testicles and scrotum grow larger
  • Fine, straight hair starts growing at the base of the penis

Stage Three Physical Changes

  • Usually happens between the ages of

11 to 16

  • Testicles and scrotum continue to grow
  • Penis grows larger
  • Pubic hair becomes darker, thicker and curlier
  • Vocal cords increase in size, causing voice to deepen
  • Height and weight may start to increase noticeably

Stage Four Physical Changes

  • Usually happens between the ages of 12 – 17
  • Growth spurt continues
  • Shoulders begin to broaden and physique becomes more muscular
  • Penis grows in width as well as length
  • Pubic hair coarsens and thickens more
  • Underarm hair appears
  • Traces of hair may appear on upper lip and chin
  • Testicles start to produce sperm; ejaculation occurs for the first time

Stage Five Physical Changes

  • Usually happens between the ages of 14 – 18
  • Adult stage; overall look is that of a young man
  • Genitals and pubic hair have an adult appearance
  • Growth spurt slows down
  • Facial hair growth may become heavier
  • Body hair growth, especially on the chest, may continue into the 20s

Nocturnal Emission - “wet dream”

  • Normal occurrence during puberty

  • Occurs during the night while you are sleeping

  • You may wake up to find your sheets or pajamas wet.

  • This happens when you have an erection and ejaculation during your sleep

  • You can not control this

  • This is normal and will stop as you get older

Involuntary erections

  • Involuntary erections occur for no apparent reason

  • Erections occur when blood flows into the penis and the muscles at the base of the penis tense causing the penis to feel hard

  • They can occur without warning during puberty

  • They go away as the muscles at the base of the penis relax, allowing blood to leave the penis

Personal Hygiene

Perspiration (sweat)

  • Helps body to regulate temperature
  • Eccrine Glands- produce clear, odorless sweat- begin working at birth
  • Apocrine Glands- become active with puberty- different type of sweat- unpleasant smell when it comes into contact with bacteria on skin-causing body odor

Personal Hygiene

  • Body produces more sweat; causing body odor
  • Bathe/shower daily with soap
  • Shampoo hair regularly
  • Control underarm odor and wetness with deodorant or antiperspirant
  • Change clothes daily and after sweating

– This means your underwear too!

Personal Hygiene

Skin Care

  • Oil glands in your skin become more active-produce excess amounts of an oily substance called sebum
  • Oil and dead skin cells can block pores, allowing bacteria to develop which can lead to acne
  • Cleanse face twice a day with face cleanser
  • Don’t squeeze or pick at pimples
  • Don’t worry; acne is a normal part of puberty, and steps can be taken to reduce it

Personal Hygiene

Bad Breath

Caused by bacteria that gathers on the small pieces of food left in your mouth, especially between your teeth.

How to prevent bad breath

  • Brush your teeth (and tongue!) for at least 2 minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, especially after meals.

  • Floss every day.

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.

  • Visit your dentist twice a year for cleanings and an

exam to check for cavities.

Healthy Bodies

  • Stay active – exercise!
  • Eat nutritious foods

-Limit soda and empty calorie snacks

  • Regular bathing and dental care

  • Personal safety-aware of surroundings, buddy system, proper protective gear when playing sports/activities
