Summer RISE

Career-based learning opportunities

MCPS rising juniors and seniors

Led by the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Partnerships Unit in collaboration with businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations

Summer RISE is an opportunity available for rising MCPS juniors and seniors during the month of July. 1,746 students have participated in Summer RISE since its inception in 2017. The program has continued to be in high demand where we have had over 1100 students for the past two years.

Due to the pandemic we expanded the opportunities to include in-person, virtual and a combination of the two. We will continue to offer virtual and hybrid options moving forward. For those familiar with Summer RISE, in previous years the program was 60 hours. We reduced the hours to accommodate the needs of hosts and as organizations were transitioning back to in-person. This year, the program will be a 50 hours.

What is the Work Based Learning Program?

Is an opportunity for students to gain some real world experience outside of the classroom before they graduate.

Positions can be paid or unpaid, but students must earn 75 hours per semester for each period that they are participating in the internship.

1 = 75 2 = 150 3 = 225

The internship is not required to be worked during the afternoon periods (may occur in the evening or on the weekends), but students meet together once a week in a seminar to discuss and reflect on the process and cover topics such as:

Workplace safety
Communication styles
Professionalism
Self-reflection and growth

What are the expectations for the students?

Students need to work on finding a position for themselves, but Mr. Foster is here to assist if needed.

Students must attend their internship on their scheduled days, or communicate with their employer/supervisor when they are unable to attend. They should inform Mr. Foster of any missing time as well.

Students will need to check out with Mr. Foster daily (through a sign-out page).
