Introduction

СП ЦСП «Энергия»

The choice of the topic "Architecture of the fire stations" was due to my personal interest in it, as well as the fact that architecture is an art that keeps up with the times and is always relevant. Architecture surrounds a person everywhere and throughout life: it is both a home, and a place of work and rest. This is an environment in which a person exists, but an artificially created environment that opposes nature, but at the same time is always connected with the surrounding space. Architecture should satisfy the practical needs of a person, but it is also able to cause "aesthetic excitement", fascinate and surprise. This is what makes architecture interesting. The purpose of my work is to show the architectural features of fire stations.

Fire Brigade Headquarters, Albert Embankment, Lambeth, London

СП ЦСП «Энергия»

LCC architects E.P.Wheeler FRIBA and Assistant Architect G.Wild FRIBA. Opened 21 July 1937

This large building consists of two sections on both sides of Lambeth High Street. The eight-storey building on the Albert Embankment was built using Portland stone and light brick. On the ground floor there are Lambeth and Lambeth River fire stations, as well as a gym. On the ground floor, the architects designed living quarters and rest rooms for fire crews on duty, as well as a control room throughout London. On the upper floors there were also the main administrative offices of the brigade and numerous apartments for fire protection officers. This building, by Higgs and Hill, is basically a rather massive office block but it has some lovely carved reliefs of firemen doing what firemen do, by Gilbert Bayes.

Hicks Gate Fire Station Bristol UK

Hicks Gate Fire Station in Bristol is a five bay fire station situated in a strategic location between Keynsham and Bristol with great access onto the local road network. The station has also been built with a number of environmentally friendly features, making it one of the most energy efficient fire stations in the UK.

The building is arranged across two floors. To reduce the internal response distances in the case of emergency call outs, we positioned the operational services on the ground floor with living and social spaces on the first floor.

Promoting a professional, public-facing image, offices are located at the front of the site, making the fire fighters visible to passersby.

Simplicity was key to this design. Used a small palette of materials which are commonly found in other agricultural buildings in the area. This consisted of a mix of anthracite corrugated metal cladding with elements of timber.

Attention was given to the detailing of the budget cladding material to deliver a strong, sophisticated aesthetic; helping to reinforce the interesting and modern external look whilst also blending into the surrounding environment.

Conclusion

The architecture of the buildings of fire stations is of interest, both from a cultural point of view and from a functional point of view. A fire station can look not just like a box, but like a real masterpiece of architecture.
