Calculating Speed
What is speed?
Speed is a measurement of the rate of change of an object’s position over a period of time
I.e. how fast an object is moving!
Formula for Calculating Speed
Speed= distance time
Speed= how fast object is moving
Distance= how far object has moved
Time= how long it traveled
-Diagrams-
Describe each car’s motion. Explain.
(Vocabulary: constant speed, acceleration).
A.
B.
Units of Measurement
Distance: meters (m), miles (m), inches (in), kilometers (km), centimeters (c)
Time: seconds (s), minutes (m), hours (h)
Speed: meters per second (m/s), miles per hour (mph), kilometers per hour (kph)
Example 1
If a car travels 40m in 2 seconds how fast is it going?
Example 2
You arrive in my class 45 seconds after leaving math which is 90 meters away. How fast did you travel?
Example 3
A plane travels 500 miles in 2 hours. What was its speed?
Position Diagrams
Which car is moving at a constant speed?
Which car is decelerating/slowing down?
Which car is accelerating/getting faster?
A.
B.
C.
Speed Problem Worksheet Formulas
Speed = distance time
Distance = speed x time
Time = distance speed
If a car travels at 60 mph for 2 hours, how far has it gone?
