The American College of Surgeons recognizes 14 surgical specialties:
- General Surgery (manage a broad spectrum of surgical conditions affecting all areas)
- Cardiovascular Surgery (specializes on the heart)
- Colon and Rectal Surgery (diagnose and treat diseases of the intestinal tract, colon, rectum, anal canal, and perianal area)
- Gynecologic Oncology/Surgery (cancers that affect the female reproductive system)
- Neurological Surgery (treatment of the brain and nervous system)
- Ophthalmic Surgery (treatment of the eyes)
- Orthopedic Surgery (the treatment of the musculoskeletal system)
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (treat a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries, and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws, and hard & soft tissues of the oral and face region)
- Otolaryngology Surgery (diseases and disorders that affect ears, the respiratory and upper alimentary systems, and related structures)
- Pediatric Surgery
- Plastic or Reconstructive Surgery
- Thoracic Surgery (arteries, lung, esophagus, and chest wall)
- Urology Surgery (manages benign and malignant medical and surgical disorders of the adrenal gland and of the genitourinary system)
- Vascular Surgery (diseases that affect the arteries and veins throughout the body)
