Hangouts basics

- 10 people max, 15 in the same school domain

- Free (Skype costs $ for group skype calls)

- Initiate a Hangout here

- Need good wifi (ethernet cord best)

- If solo, earphones best

- Hangouts are live but are private by default (ie. invitation only.)

- Can make a video of your Hangout with Hangouts on Air

How to use Hangouts in schools

1. Do a virtual Field trip with Learn Around the World or Exploring By the Seat of Your Pants

2. Invite guests to Hangout with your class. Most authors, celebrities, athletes, artists, etc. are on Twitter where you can connect. Invite an expert of something you are doing class, or a far away relative!

3. Invite another class to Hangout with your class. Students can ask each other questions, sing songs to each other, read a book together, etc.

4. Do a Mystery Hangout with another class. Classes need to guess each other’s locations by asking questions.

5. Click here and here and here and here for more ideas.

Important things to do

before and during the hangout

1. PRACTICE! Practice with your family, friends, colleagues, students before you can go live.

2. In class, try to set up a good amount of time before the event to make sure everything is working properly..

3. If doing a Mystery Hangout, assign roles. Click here for some ideas.

Click here to see my roles.

4. Document the event with photos and videos. Students love to watch themselves after (Admin & parents love it, too!)

5. Point the webcam towards your students so that the other party

can see them.

6. Use Google+ chat to communicate with other party just before starting.
