Impact of OER on Student Success

Comparing OER users to users of traditionally copyrighted materials, we see:

  • no difference in final grade (on scale of 0 - 4)
  • a small effect on the “C or better” rate
  • a small effect on the drop rate
  • a small effect on the course throughput rate

  • Two statistical tests have been used throughout.

  • T-test is a simple comparison of average values - does one average differ from another in a statistically significant manner?

  • Multiple regression estimates the impact of OER use in the context of other factors, including prior GPA, age, gender, ethnicity, Pell eligibility, etc.
