Opening Prayer
Opening Prayer (In Unison)
God of the living,
through baptism we pass from the shadow of death
to the light of the resurrection.
Remain with us and give us hope
that, rejoicing in the gift of the Spirit
who gives life to our mortal flesh,
we may be clothed with the garment of immortality,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
OPENING Hymn
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
Blessed AssuranceUMH # 369
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.
Blessed submission, perfect delight!
visions of rapture
now burst on my sight;
angels descending bring from above,
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, all is at rest!
I in my savior am happy and blest,
watching and waiting, looking above;
filled with his goodness,
lost in his love.
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

Our Father, who art in heavenHallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come, Thy will be doneon earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread,and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those
who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation,but deliver us from evil.For thine is the kingdom,The power, and the glory forever.Amen
The Lord’s Prayer
Scripture Reading
I Samuel 16: 1-13 New Revised Standard Version
16 The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2 Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.”
And the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.” 4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded, and came to Bethlehem.
The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5 He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is now before the LORD.” 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
11 Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.” 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome.
The LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

When peace, like a river,
attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot,
thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well,
it is well with my soul.”
It Is Well With My Soul
UMH # 377
It is well (it is well)
with my soul
(with my soul),
it is well,
it is well with my soul!
Though Satan should buffet,
though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control,
that Christ has regarded
my helpless estate,
and hath shed his own blood
for my soul!
It is well (it is well)
with my soul
(with my soul),
it is well,
it is well with my soul!
My sin, oh, the bliss
of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part put the whole,
is nailed to the cross,
and I bear it no more,
praise the Lord,
praise the Lord,
O my soul.
It is well (it is well)
with my soul
(with my soul),
it is well,
it is well with my soul!
And, Lord, haste the day
when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound,
and the Lord shall descend,
even so,
it is well with my soul.
It is well (it is well)
with my soul
(with my soul),
it is well,
it is well with my soul!

Trust and ObeyUMH # 467
When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus…,
but to trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest
if we trust and obey.
Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus…,
but to trust and obey.
But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
for the joy he bestows,
are for them
who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus…,
but to trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we’ll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.
