Problem

  • girls don’t choose tech-related fields of study
  • strong gender inequality in taking extra STEM courses outside school (for every ten boys, there is one girl)ďż˝

2018 – how we started

2022 - the first graduates

HK Unicorn Squad:

  • 2018 – pilot-group with 17 girls
  • Currently, 4500+ girls have taken part in the programme
  • Growth ~ 800 girls per year. The interest is very high. Queue time to join the programme is almost a year.
  • Hundreds of learning groups all over Estonia. All counties are covered
  • 6 practical courses (1 course = 10x1,5h)
  • Courses are given by teachers and parents themselves without technical background or special knowledge
  • HK Unicorn Squad has fully prepared and equipped lessons, including video tutorials, robots and other materials.

Equipment sharing system. Lessons are packed into the boxes. The HK Unicorn Squad coordinates the circulation of the kits between learning groups.

Cooperation with Viimsi School

  • from autumn 2022 the US programme is part of the regular school day
  • named as V-tech class
  • from 2-4 grade, 120 academic hours
  • classes are given to boys and girls separately
  • taught by regular class teachers
  • currently, 450 students from Viimsi school are receiving the US tech lessons

  • In cooperation with Taltech, we have developed an advanced programme for (15) 16-19 year-old - Unicorn Squad PRO
  • Currently ~400 girls
  • Four practical courses
  • 1000 girls by 2026
  • Supported by the European Social Fund

Guidelines

  1. Follow instructors notes on which tools are available.
  2. Share ideas openly with team mates and the instructor.
  3. Copying is allowed on your own responsibility,
  4. If in need, ask for help.

Build a capsule for the passenger, which protects and keeps it intact when dropped.

  1. There needs to be a string attached to your construction.
  2. You cannot glue or duct tape the passenger to the construction.
  3. The passenger needs to be brought out in 15 sec after touchdown.
  4. If there will be more then one survivor, then the team with the lightest construction wins.

Build a jet-powered vehicle that can travel a given distance as accurately as possible.

  1. The jet engine shell (bottle) must be easily removable.
  2. The vehicle must stop and accelerate independently.
  3. All parts of the vehicle must be attached to the vehicle.
  4. Follow the safety instructions given by the instructor!
  5. Do not apply hot glue to the bottle.
