Stuck in the Middle (What’s the problem?)

  • Some topics don’t belong in the IRTF and are not ready for the IETF.

  • It is important for these topics to develop inside the IETF.
    • The Area can monitor their evolution, highlight and focus the conversation, and consider engineering proposals as they emerge.
    • The IETF benefits by having discussions about Internet technology where any enhancement should be developed.
    • Discussions can take place openly.

What can we do?

  • Non-WG Mailing List
    • Open discussion
    • Informal, not-moderated, focused discussion, consensus has no standing

What can we do today?

  • Non-WG Mailing List
    • Open discussion
    • Informal, not-moderated, focused discussion, consensus has no standing, no agenda time

  • Working Group
    • Structured/Formal, charter with deliverables/milestones, chairs guide the operation, consensus
    • Agenda time

What do we want?

  • Open discussion
  • Informal, but moderated/directed
  • Chair
  • Agenda time if needed (@ Open Area Meeting)
  • No charter, deliverables, milestones.

  • Chair function: summarize/minute the discussions (wiki), coordinate with ADs agenda time

  • Area-specific forum, IESG approval is not required, open/close at the discretion of the ADs.
