Project Title: Objects Colliding
Project at a Glance : This project is for a 6th grade science class to learn more about forces and motion. This unit will provide students with hands on activities to understand Newton’s Laws and to better see/experience why it makes sense. This unit is about 4 weeks. Students will create a model or simulation in groups to show objects colliding.

How can we show Newton’s Third Law?
Example: How can we meet a need of someone in our community?

Project timeline:
When do you plan to run your classroom PBL project (ex: November)?
It’s our second unit for science-we go back and forth between social studies and science, possibly November, but it will depend on our plan of which subject starts first.
Approximate length of project (ex: 2 weeks)? Thinking about 4 weeks.

Forces come in pairs
longboards two kids, both push, one kid pushes, one kid pushes one arm locks (two kids on one board)
what is it about that for it to happen?
bug hitting semi-what happens to bug and what happens to semi
forces are the same-inertia and momentum is greater from semi
pick something simple (egg cars-cinder block at bottom of ramp) keep egg from breaking (crumple zones in front)
slap hand on table (equal and opposite reactions)
build car out of paper-wheels and axles

What Standards and Skills do you want your students to master during the PBL? | Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Communication Flexibility and Adaptation Personal Accountability MS-PS2-1. Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects. MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. MS-PS3-1. Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object. |
What will you do to put your students into Successful Teams and Build Culture? | -Creative DNA/creative sequence assessment Making sure each group has leaders as well as hard workers and students that are shy/more go with the flow -’I like’ chair game-for the kids to find out similarities amongst themselves -Hopes, Fears, Norms Remember to go through that often to just set expectations -Find someone who…. |
What will you do for an Entry Event? | Bumper car simulation or video- thought about Craig’s Cruisers to experience bumper cars, logistically might be tricky for a random field trip. |
