SECTION 1: PATIENCE & PERSEVERANCE

9 of 29

BE PATIENT IN SUFFERING

Key Teaching:

    • “Be patient and stand firm because the Lord’s coming is near.” (5:8)
    • Life is difficult
    • Jesus has not returned yet
    • Evil exists around us
    • But we must wait like a farmer waits for harvest

10 of 29

PERSEVERANCE

    • Hard times test our faith
    • Patience builds spiritual maturity
    • God rewards faithfulness (James 1:12)
    • Stand firm — Jesus is coming

Discussion:

    • When do you struggle to be patient?

SECTION 2: LISTEN AND DO

12 of 29

NOT JUST HEARERS – BUT DOERS

Read: James 1:19–27

“Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says!” (1:22)

    • Listening is not enough
    • Knowledge without action is self-deception
    • Faith must produce obedience

THE MIRROR ILLUSTRATION

James compares a hearer-only believer to:

A man who looks in a mirror

Then forgets what he looks like.

Lesson:

    • If we study God’s Word but do not change, we are forgetting what we learned.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

    • When do you lose your temper?
    • How can you guard against anger?
    • Does your walk match your talk?

“Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” (1:19)

SECTION 3: FAITH IN ACTION

16 of 29

FAITH WITHOUT WORKS

Read: James 2:14–26

“Faith without deeds is dead.” (2:26)

    • Faith must be visible
    • Belief must produce action
    • Words alone are not enough

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

If someone is:

    • Hungry
    • Poorly clothed

And we say:

    • “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed.”

But we do nothing —

    • That is useless faith.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF FAITH IN ACTION

    • Abraham – Obeyed God (Genesis 22)
    • Rahab – Protected the spies
    • Job – Persevered in suffering
    • Elijah – Powerful prayer

They believed — and they acted.

SECTION 4: WEALTH & WORLDLY INFLUENCE

20 of 29

DO NOT BE INFLUENCED BY WEALTH

Read: James 5:1–6; 4:13–17; 2:1–9

Lessons:

    • Wealth rusts and rots
    • Hoarding is selfish
    • Money is not evil — but loving it is dangerous
    • Wealth should help others

21 of 29

GOD’S VIEW VS WORLD’S VIEW

World says:

“Accumulate more.”

God says:

Use wealth wisely

Provide for needs

Help others

Matthew 6:19–24:

Store treasures in heaven.

SECTION 5: CONTROL YOUR TONGUE

23 of 29

CONTROL YOUR TONGUE

Read: James 3:1–11

James compares the tongue to:

    • A bit in a horse’s mouth
    • A rudder on a ship
    • A spark that starts a forest fire

All are small — but powerful.

24 of 29

THE POWER OF WORDS

“With the tongue we praise our Lord… and curse men.” (3:9–10)

Words can:

    • Build up
    • Tear down
    • Encourage
    • Destroy

We must choose carefully.

25 of 29

HOW TO TAME THE TONGUE

    • Be quick to listen
    • Be slow to speak
    • Be slow to anger
    • Think before speaking
    • Use words to bless, not curse

LIFE APPLICATION

Throughout life:

    • We will face suffering
    • We will face temptation
    • We will face choices

But we must:

    • Pray
    • Trust God
    • Live out our faith daily

“If any one of you is in trouble? He should pray.” (James 5:13)
