Welcome to AP/Dual Credit Chemistry
Chemistry 130 is a study of fundamental chemistry principles, including atomic structure, chemical bonding, kinetic theory, chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, solutions, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry and equilibrium. Recommended for pre-professional, engineering and related science and medicine majors. I hope to create a similar college classroom experience to prepare the students for the next steps they will take in college. Students will learn through teacher lead discussions as well as laboratory inquiry experiences throughout the year. The course is structured around the enduring understandings within the six big ideas described in the AP Chemistry Curriculum Framework.
Grading Procedures:
A Total points system is used to calculate grades. Grades are determined by dividing an individual student’s accumulated point total by the total number of points possible.
Tests: …………………………..…………..…100 points
Quizzes ………………………………………5-20 points
Labs …………………………………….……10-30 points
Homework ……………………………………5-10 points
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F Below 60
Classroom Expectations for Safety
There will be no food or drink in the lab. Students who need access to food or beverages may keep them on the table near the front of the room.
Goggles must be worn until all lab stations are cleaned up.
Students must get an A on the safety quiz and return their signed safety contract in order to participate in lab.
Helpful Websites
PowerSchool is an excellent way to stay on top of your grades, tardies, and absences:https://ps1.morton709.org/public/home.html
Schoology is where students AND parents access content, assignments, announcements and resources: http://mcusd709.schoology.com
OpenStax is our online textbook: https://openstax.org/details/books/chemistry-2e
Aktiv Chemistry is our resource for online homework: https://aktiv.com/chemistry/
Make – up Work/late work:
Aktiv Chemistry assignments are eligible for the occasional extension, until the date of the unit exam, with the expectation that if you turn the work in after grades are in PowerSchool that you will kindly request an update to your grade when the work is completed. No late work will be accepted after the unit exam.
Tests and Quizzes should be made up as soon as possible according to the timelines posted in the school handbook.

AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description
This link will take you to the detailed expectations for the course.
Academic Assistance
M-Th: 3:00pm – 3:40pm
M-F: Potter Hour
Prep Periods: 4th & 5th
Students can find me in 43 or the science office for a quick question any morning but may want to make official plans to meet if they need extensive help on a given morning. Everyone is welcome to come to my potter hour for help, but will need to ask me for a pass.
Homework Expectations
We will use the Aktiv Chemistry app for most of our homework assignments. Aktiv Chem offers you multiple chances to get each question correct and links directly to our online text.
We will also complete a progress check on AP Classroom for each unit. Progress checks will be made available a few days before the unit exam and will be due on the day of exam. These will be graded for completion.
Academic Dishonesty
Cheating on quizzes or tests will result in a zero for that assessment and will warrant a discussion with your parents and/or an administrator.
AP Chemistry is a fun class and I look forward to learning, problem solving, experimenting, and building with all of you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fritts
First semester:
Unit 1 - Atomic Structure and Properties
Unit 2 - Molecular and Ionic Compound structure and properties
Unit 3 - Intermolecular Forces and Properties
Part 1: (3.1-3.6) Gas Laws
Part 2: (3.7-3.13) Solutions
Unit 4 - Chemical Reactions
Unit 6 - Thermodynamics
Second Semester:
Unit 5 - Kinetics
Unit 7 - Equilibrium
Unit 8 - Acids and Bases
Unit 9 - Applications of Thermodynamics
Part 1: (9.1-9.6) Thermodynamics
Part 2: (9.7-9.10) Electrochemistry
Attendance/Early Lab
The students are expected to be a class on time ready to learn everyday. As a part of the fall semester for this course there will be a one day per week zero hour lab section starting at 7:00 am. Students are expected to be on time and if there is a prelab exercise it is due upon arrival. If it is not completed the student will not be able to participate in the laboratory activity.
Test Retakes
You will have the opportunity to retake unit tests if you are not satisfied with your grade. Retakes must be done by the last day of quarter except for the 4th quarter where the deadline is the day before the AP exam.
